Sylvanian Family

Sylvanian Family were small flocked soft plastic animals with poseable limbs that inhabited their own old-fashioned English village. They were totally out of sync with their era, instead of neon colours and flashing lights they had pretty floral dresses for the girls and checkered trousers with braces for the boys.

To start with Sylvanian Family featured the standard British woodland creatures: mole, badger, grey rabbit, brown rabbit, mouse etc. However, after a while they got a little crazier: grey bear, duck, frog, and now they're making reindeer, panda and rhino Sylvanians!

Maple Town were a cheaper rip-off of Sylvanian Family.

I still have the country house, mansion house, treehouse, school, bakery, gypsy caravan- and probably more- tucked away in the loft for when it's actually worth something on ebay & i can sell them. But maybe i'll keep them cos they're so damn cute! I won a competition once (i think the prize was a duck family?) by creating a little village on the rockery in my garden! I say 'i' but my mum and brother contributed! It was awesome!! We put stones together to form little pathways!

I had one bear and a baby rabbit I think, but I used to love more than anything going to my friends house as she had LOADS. It was great. I was careful never to take mine in case they got mixed up though. Cool toys that are still great now.

I loved Sylvanian family, my sister and I literally had 100s of figures! Every time we went to the toy shop we would choose Sylvanaians over anything else. It would take a day to set up the whole collection over our bedroom so we could play with it all.

I was working as a nanny in the late 80s and the little girl I was taking care of got the rabbit family & house for her birthday one year. When the novelty started to wear off, I discovered that I could rekindle her interest by drawing a layout for a garden or park, etc, on a large sheet of paper. She would colour it in, and then play with the rabbits on the new layout. When one got worn out, I could just draw a different one for her. She loved her Sylvanian Family, and I have to admit I enjoyed playing with it with her.
