Baby Coochy Coo

Baby CoochyCoo was produced by ERTL in the early 90s as far as I remember. The concept was clever but I have to say I found the doll really quite weird. Those of us old enough might remember the "Mamma" Dolls. Dolls that could produce some kind of a crying sound without the need for batteries. Basically you tilted the unfortunate baby forward and when you tilted it back it made a noise that was supposed to sound like "Mamma!" The fact that it often sounded more like the baby was being strangled was by the way! :D Anyway, Coochy Coo took this crying without batteries thing to the next level. She was a small doll, if she was 14 inches long she was no more and I think she may have been smaller, made out of rubber that wasn't very nice to touch. She had a baldy head, she may have had some moulded on or painted hair but I just remember the feel of that bare head, and painted eyes. When her box was opened she was shrink wrapped in sellophane with no clothes on, though a romper suit did arrive with her, why she wasn't dressed in it I honestly don't know! She came with a tiny bottle that wouldn't have fed a flea, never mind a baby. But why was she called Coochy coo? You may well ask! This baby was feather light because she was hollow, full of air, but she did have something inside, a squeaker, and not just any old squeaker! If you squeezed her it sounded like she was crying. By varying the squeezes you could get anything from grizzles and whimpers to full on yelling the lungs out. Ok, so the baby was squashed flat most of the time and the crying sounded really quite spooky but hey! No batteries required right? And when you got tired of the screaming she also made a really good football!
