Cheese And Pineapple Hedgehog

Back in the 80s, no party was worth going to unless the table centrepiece was a cheese and pineapple hedgehog. You couldn't get a much better party snack in my opinion, although some people didn't feel the same... there would always be abandoned sticks with just bits of pineapple left on. Nowadays you just don't get the same quality buffet food. You're lucky if there's a plate of vol au vents on offer.

A children's party buffet in the late Eighties and early Nineties, prepared by overworked but loyal Mums, would often have: A cheese and pineapple hedgehog - the centrepiece! Party sausage rolls, cold as no one had realised you were meant to heat them up, and /or sausages on sticks Ham and jam sandwiches, cut into quarters, the massive crusts left on. Or maybe peanut butter Crisps Pork pies cut into quarters A pizza, slightly burnt as Pass the Parcel had run on. Especially seen during the (first) Turtles craze. Cream crackers with Lurpak and grated cheese Mr Kipling Fondant Fancies Fox's Party Rings Chocolate crispie cakes made with Rice Krispies Mince pies - at Christmas, the same problem as with the sausage rolls above Mmm. Can anyone add any more?

My mum still brings out one of these if she has a 'do'! She covers a potato in foil and sticks them in that. Vol au vents were (and still are) a bit posh for us, but nowadays she may even bring out some chicken legs rather than the tired old lettuce leaves and tomatoes cut like flowers that were a feature of our 1970s buffets. The cheese and pineapple lives on -and always goes down a treat!

Must have the orange hedgehog base wrapped in tin foil for a classy buffet. That's what me old ma did. Also cheese with pickled onion for added choice.

Just remembered something else. Did anyone ever make a sausage and mash hedgehog, with a mound of mash and the sausages for spikes? You used a pea for the hedgehog's nose.

We always had these at the Christmas party when I was a lad. They've made a welcome return now, along with prawn cocktails and sausage rolls.

I still make these (including the cocktail sausages) every Christmas. There are never any left after the party!

Top party table essential, closely followed by the cocktail sausages on sticks and even better if they were of the hotdog variety!!!
