Kenny Everett Video Show

Kenny Everet was something that my dad used to watch, and that I was allowed to watch too if it didn't get too rude.

It featured many characters, all performed by Kenny, like Cupid Stunt - a blonde woman who hosted a gossip show who had the catchphrase "All done in the best POSSIBLE taste", Sid Snot the punk, a mime who used to draw things and they used to appear, and an unforgettable sketch in which Spiderman goes to use the toilet. ewwwwwwww!

Kenny E was an absolute, boundary pushing comedy genius! My favourite sketch was his impersonation of Rod Stewart, where his bum would inflate discretely in-between camera cuts untill it was so big he floated away. Miss you, Kenny! x

Very edgy for its time, and hugely funny to my teenage eyes and ears. But of course that was in the days of 3 or 4 channel TV, and no internet. So you were rather limited for choice in terms of edgy comedy. Didn't the show also have a dance group - Hot Gossip? Not very PC and probably will never see the light of day again in today's more sanitised touchy-feely media. But it was fun while it lasted

My sister and I used to watch it- Everett was a former Radio 1 DJ and the most obnoxious little egotist you can imagine, although parts of the show could be very funny- I well recall 'Brother Lee Love' the happy-clappy American preacher, as well as the cartoon series 'Captain Kremmen, Star Crusader'. This was a cartoon series shown within the video show featuring Everett's alter-ego Captain Kremmen, who flew a starship across the Universe along with a crew of stock humorous characters (small German professor, big bumbling First Mate, and the sexy blonde Carla, who was all boobs, legs and lips). The shp was shaped like an old-style horizontal cassete recorder, with the cassette as the auxiliary onboard scout vehicle. A lot of the humour on the Video Show was actually cribbed from Benny Hill. Everett (whose real name was Maurice Cole) was a horrid little man, an anti-Welsh Thatcherite who once caused controversy by making anti-Russian jokes during a stage show that were also aimed at Michael Foot. He died of AIDS in '95- I wish I could say that I mourned his passing.
