Friendship bracelets

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Friendship Bracelets became the trademark of being a Student in the late 80s/early 90s- preferably worn with a festival entrance band. You did them up really tightly so they were impossible to get off. After several months they took on a unique pungent smell. Eventually you had to cut them off.

No one ever gave me any. My friend Alison and I always made funn of the string-wearers, which is what we called the girls that wore lots at once.

I still have some of these. They don't fit on my hand anymore.

I was about 11 when the friendship bracelet craze took off. I remember they were really cheap and you could get millions down the market with your pocket money. I can't remember any of us actually giving them to each other as a token of friendship. It was more a case of buy as many as you can and wear them all at once (up to your elbow if possible!).I also remember making them out of the thread we used for cross stitch at school when the teacher wasn't looking.

I remember making my own friendship bracelets at brownies/guides. I gave loads away and never received any myself so made some just for me to wear!
