Boomtown Rats

The Boomtown Rats were formed by Bob Geldof in 1975 and by 1977 they had their first top 20 hit in the UK "Lookin' After Number One".

Perhaps their most famous hit was "I Don't Like Mondays" which reached number one in the UK and was a massive worldwide hit.

Frontman Bob Geldof also famously organised and recorded "Do They Know It's Christmas?" making millions for Ethiopian famine relief charities. And as if that wasn't enough he then masterminded Live Aid making a further $100 for Ethiopian famine relief.

Not sure what I think about Mr.Geldof- I've never forgiven him for a really offensive, stupid remark he made at the Brit Awards in late '84, when he said that The Holocaust was 'like a tea party' in comparison to the Ethiopian Famine. He's also been obnoxious about the Welsh alnguage, which coming from an Irishman I think is a bit rich considering that we've done so much more than they have to preserve our own tongue. Having said that, Band Aid / Live Aid / Sport Aid did raise tens of millions of pounds, although it was the British public who were the real heroes of those events- the whole thing would've been a complete flop if we hadn't given money to support them.
