The Bionic Woman

I remember "Bionic Woman" (starring Lindsey Wagner) as a TV show airing on the British Sky Channel during the late 80s. The show was about a woman, half human half robot, or more like human on the outside with a robotic interior. A cyborg.

Every episode she fought "evil" and she had special features of course. And every time she jumped, they added this special effect noice. Very cheesy!

Wagner's character was called Jamie Somers, severely injured after a skydiving accident, who was brought back from near-death via a similar process to 'The Six Million Dollar Man'. Whilst he had a bionic eye, she was graced with an ear of similar amazing abilities. Like her male counterpart Steve Austin (Lee Majors), Jamie Somers worked as a special agent for the US Government, on top-secret undercover missions. Although she started out working seperately from Austin, it was only a matter of time before they ended up as a twosome (although they never produced a Bionic Baby, as Benny Hill once parodied!) Richard Anderson played their agency boss Oscar Goldman, with Jennifer Darling as his astute but dizzy-comic secretary Callahan. The episodes were a mixture of sci-fi and espionage, aired from 1976 to about '80-ish. Terrifying to me were the dreaded 'Fembots', killer female androids created by rogue scientist Carl Franklink (Martin E. Brooks) to help him in his quest for global domination. They looked, moved and sounded just like real human women, but were in fact dangerous super-machines at least equal to (and sometimes superior to) Steve and Jamie's superhuman powers. When hit in the face, the 'faces' would fly off to reveal a mass of electronics behind, with artificial eyes and a speaker for a mouth. Those damn things scared the life out of me, and were responsible for many of my sleepless nights as a child- I kept thinking that one might come up into my bedroom or something. Looking at old TV stills of them now, it's easy to see that the actresses are wearing cleverly-made masks, but when one is 8 years old it's not so easy to spot these things. Robot doubles were made of Callahan and also Oscar Goldman- the latter ends up having it's head knocked off by Steve in a desert fight. The 'fembots' were later parodied in the 'Austin Powers' films, equipped with machine-gun boobs! A Bionic Dog was later introduced (a former police Alsatian called Max, with a bionic jaw). A special one-off finale to the 'Bionic' series was made in 1998, when Steve and Jamie meet up again in early middle-age and get married, afterwards reflecting upon their past adventures (though not embarking upon any new ones- I assume that their batteries were running down by then, or their MOT's had expired or something). Majors went on to appear in 'The Fall Guy' in the early '80s, a comic adventure series about a Hollywood stunt man and his sidekick 'Colt'.
