M.U.S.C.L.E. Men

MUSCLE men (or "Millions of Unusually Small Creatures Lurking Everywhere") was first produced in Japan. Some of the characters were based on a zany Japanese comic (in fact, there is a cartoon show about it on television nowadays featuring some of the same characters) and toyline featuring robots that changed into lighters. The toyline was imported to the US and marketed by Mattel.

The actual toys were small, pink, hard rubber figures of various different wrestlers/creatures and they were available in at least three different kinds of packages: ten figures stuffed in a clear plastic garbage can; four figures in a small blister pack, or something like twenty figures in a large box.

The US toy commercials featured a nostalgia-type old B&W horror theme with the MUSCLE men invading various places around the world. Later on, a wrestling ring was released and MUSCLE men started to come in a variety of different fruit colors. A line with women wrestlers was also release ("CUTIES").

I remember playing with these little guys for hours with my brother when we were very little. I bout some of the trash cans off of ebay so I can share them with my son who is 1 right now. I've been to afghanistan and iraq and took a little guy with me both times. They really remind me of how much fun me and my brother had playing together when we were little. They don't make good toys like this anymore. There were mechanical parts so your imagination could run wild.

Muscle men played such a big part in my childhood, me and my cousin would buy them in four packs from the local post office's bargain bucket. We would make them wrestle, play football (with a subbutteo ball) and make them ride speedway bikes and race. There is a website that lists all their names - http://www.i-mockery.com/minimocks/muscle/ - but we didn't know them at the time so we made up our own names like 'Western Mean', 'Pink Knight' and 'Red Skin'...Brilliant!!!
