Hale and Pace

I first remember seeing Hale and Pace in their "The Management" guise on the Ben Elton-hosted "Friday Night Live". For some reason ITV seemed to think a series of 3 minute interludes on a late night ultra-PC "Alternative Comedy" Channel 4 show was enough reason to give them a series of their own. Watching sketches from it now, it doesn't seem to have aged that well. That said, I'm not sure whether the appeal was that it was 'funny', or that it was a 'grown-ups comedy show'.. something that effectively became a badge of prestige at school the Monday after.

"Hey Ian, Did you see Hale & Pace last night?"

"Hi Steven. Yeah , that bit where they said p*ss was great.. And they did that song about pants! How about you Paul? What was your favourite bit?"

"My parents don't let me watch it.."

"Come on Ian, lets not talk to Paul. He clearly smells of fleas."

Ah, happy days...

They were "edgy" back in the day; reminding me of the BBC's Smith & Jones show, but far more one dimensional and vulgar. And it says a lot when I can only remember "The Management" duo in all that time,

They weren't that funny, I remember a clip from the trailers on my old Robocop video - which is some hard core rememberin' - and anything of it's intellectual calibre wouldn't wash today. Remember the sketch of the pair of them dressed as kids saying rude stuff unintentially? "Hello Timmy, my yo-yo goes up and down up and down when you play with it." My primary school teacher, Mr Colin was their flatmate for a while though.
