Cabbage Patch Dolls
Cabbage Patch Dolls :
Innocent-looking it may be, but parents everywhere would never again underestimate the pulling power of a pair of pudgy stuffed arms and too-closely set eyes. Never again would they spend the weeks before Christmas waking up in a cold sweat because they couldn't - for love nor money - find a toy store that had any in stock. What am i talking about? The year of 1983, that's what, and the Cabbage Patch Kids craze (or curse, as parents might refer to it).
The Cabbage Patch Kids - not to be confused with the poor imitation Flower Patch Kids, which didn't even have separate fingers - didn't hit the big time straightaway, though. In the beginning, they had been the subjects of an art exhibition created by scuptor, Xavier Roberts. He used German fabric sculpting and quilting methods to produce his (originally termed) 'Little People', which he'd sell at various arts and crafts fairs to substitute his art school fees. Roberts later opened up an area of Babyland General Hospital as a 'birthing' and rehoming department for his Cabbage Patch Kids. Here, people would come to buy their own doll, and even today tourists flock to the site in Georgia, US.
As the popularity of the dolls grew, in 1982 Roberts partnered up with toy manufacturer Coleco to meet demand from the masses (this had been given an unexpected boost with an appearance on reality TV show Real People in the US).
By modern standards, these dolls were rather ugly, with pudgy, round faces, stumpy arms and small, close-set eyes. What seemed to draw kids to them, however, was their uniqueness - a point that was cleverly marketed and made the dolls stand out. Each doll came with its own birth certificate for its new owner to keep in pride of place, so each Cabbage Patch Doll also had its own unique name. Once the adoptive parents (the doll's new owners) filled out the included paperwork and sent this off to the manufacturer, they would then receive a first birthday card in the post! And as if they weren't unique enough, the computer-controlled manufacturing process randomly made small changes to each doll so that no two dolls were the same.
Despite rioting in the aisles as parents fought to get the last Cabbage Patch Doll in the run up to Christmas, the dolls were discontinued in 1989. Hasbro took over production from this point, adding a number of gimmicks, such as ones wit kazoos they could play. Unsurprisingly, this didn't take off, so in 1994 Mattel took over the Cabbage Patch Kid license. The most revolutionary change Mattel made to the dolls was making some available in vinyl - making for much more durable playmates. In 1996, there was also a range of Olympiakids released to cash in on the Olympics that year.
The Talking Cabbage Patch Kid was a side line launch that was perhaps a bit ahead of its time (something Furbys would later get spot on). The price tag for owning a doll that was able to detect the presence of another doll and converse with it without any human interaction was pretty steep back then, plus there was the added price for many of the nightmares that would come from owning such a 'toy'.
In 2003 Toys R Us had its chance to make a mark on Cabbage Patch Kids. It decided to produce 20-inch kids (compared to the usual 14 inches) - in celebration of 20 years of Cabbage Patch Kids.
But enough of the facts. What everyone wants to know is: were they worth the bruises, Mum? Of course they were.

Also remembered...

All our favorite Muppet characters as babies!
The Muppet Babies was a Saturday morning cartoon where the babies would always get in to trouble by opening their closet door and entering some kind of crazy adventure. By the end of the show their Nanny would come back and it would all be alright again.
They made little plastic/rubber figurines (and probably plush dolls too).
They also included Muppet Babies in McDonald's Happy Meals at one point!

I got my first Cabbage Patch Kid in 1983/4 when they first came out. AT that time you couldnt buy them in a store you had to order if from a catalog and all you specified was if you wanted a girl or boy black or white..then when it came you were surprised! It was great....her name is Agnes Millie she had red pig tails and had a pacifier! I still have her to this day and im 32.

If im remembering correctly i think the Garbage Pail Kids where created after the actual Cabbage Patch as sort of making fun of them. How dare they! lol

I got one that talked one christmas. unfortunatly being the careless baggage that I am I lost the special cup which you had to have to give her a drink and oh how I began to hate her constant requests for a drink. she just wouldnt give up. always it was 'I'm thirsty' or 'wheres my cup'...
fen 07-Jun-2004, 10:16:42 PM
Yes the one lady was right. Garbage Pail came after them...poking fun at the cabbage patch kids.

I remember wanting a cabbage patch kid really badly. I finally got one in 1987 or so. It was a preemie and I remember it's head was meant to smell like that of a real baby (dunno how they managed that.. elaborate baby-head-smell-syphoning-equipment, um). As my brothers were not much into playing 'pretend', I used to play by myself with my preemie and imagine that I was a single parent and that I worked at a bank (I have distinct memories of creating fake money and cheques) Hopefully, that doesn't pan out in real life :).

Everyone seemed to own a Cabbage Patch back then.. It was right after New years when my sisters and i each got one. They were so ugly..they were cute. You just had to have one!Of course it was the biggest thing at school, when it was time for Show and Tell.We would argue whose was the best...of course each little girl seemed to think theirs was.(Mothers instinct i guess). The best part of that doll was it's cute little butt. They must of had it signed there, for that reason!!

My mother bought me my first cabbage patch doll on my fist birthday.Unfortunately my mother passed away only a few years later. Then my aunt threw my doll away.I am 23 now and still searching for the same doll.If I remember correctly her name was Jenny. She had short blond loopy hair and blue eyes. She wore a light pink 2 piece outfit with pink rose buds on it.If anyone has any info. on this peticular doll I would apreciate it dearly if they would leave a message Thanks

Cabbage patch dolls rocked they were adorable. and so cuddly i remember have one with springy hair. i got about five! unfortunately they are in my attic. The new ones are so tacky the last cabbage patch doll i got come with face paints and was all hard that promptly ended my love for cabbage patch dolls.
becca 13-Mar-2005, 02:35:50 PM
I got my first Cabbage Patch Kid back in Christmas of '83, and that was when they just started coming out I think, because my Mom told me, several years later, that she had rushed straight to the stores during one of her breaks while she was at teachers' college, and when she picked up my doll, a customer had come up to her asking, "Are you sure you're going to be buying that doll?" Anyway, my first Cabbage Patch was a girl with long blond hair named Gloria, and I had two more later including a Premie. Like Jen mentioned in this thread, I would also pretend that I was a single mother and was going to University instead of elementary school!

I remember there were 2 camps with these, you either loved them or hated them. I was in the hating camp. Could never understand why anyone would want one, and neither could my friends!
Bethan 29-Mar-2005, 05:33:08 PM
Oooh hu can forget the cabbage patch dolls? i had at least 5 of each different set that came out. I loved them. Girls, boys, black, white, u name it, i had it. And it's great that they r still selling them, coz u might wanna get one 4 ur kids! Live on Cabbage Patch Dolls! Live on!
Nicky 01-Apr-2005, 07:42:20 PM
I remember the year they came out my mother went to go purchase one for me for valentine's day. Honest to god, she almost got into a fight with a lady due to it being the last one on the shelf. Do you guys remember that? She has yellow hair that smells like baby powder with a green jumpsuit. I STILL have and love her. :)
Megan 20-Apr-2005, 03:21:59 AM
I adored my cabbage patch dolld so much when I was little. Now I'm 22 and have Xavier Roberts signature tattooed on my left butt cheek!
Lindsay 03-Sep-2005, 03:03:47 PM
Weren't they banned in the more conservative of the States - which only added to their popularity ?

I have 3 CPKs. I got my first one in 1986-ish. It's a Cornsilk hair kid. My Great aunt got her for me, and when I'm home, I sometimes will still play with her hair and make new styles.
Melissa 31-Oct-2005, 02:53:50 AM
I remeber wanting a Cabbage Patch kid more that owt when I was little. I wanted so much, that a friend let me borrow hers for a few days, and I was in heaven. I finally got one in '85, but later lost her due to moving so much. I also had a 'Koosa much later, but my dad made me give him away to some poor ppl. I collect 80s toys now, and have many CPKs, mostly new ones. I love the new Babies. I also got a 'Koosa again :) I really wish they would bring 'Koosas back; I'd get all the cat ones. I remember Garbage Pail Kids. I had tonnes of those cards, but when my dad saw them, he made me get rid of them, and forbade me to collect them.
Denise 04-Nov-2005, 09:11:00 AM
I have a CPK from 1986 with a NY Mets uniform on. I can't find one anywhere. Does anyone know how I could price it, and see how many of those were made...my Grandmother bought it for me, and I want to have it graded an protected...any help would be great. Thanks

Well I was very young, in the 80's, my grandmother gave my sister and I Cabbage Patch Dolls. Mine was, Patty, and my sister had, Rachael. Her and I loved our dolls more than anything. We would take these dolls everywhere. Even when we were in our teenage years we'd still take care of them and made sure they were going to last us for a long time. But on January 11, 1998, right after Christmas, her and I were in school and heard the shocking news that our house was on fire and nothing was saved. My sister and I lost our best friends. We were wanting to pass them down to our children if we had any but now we both are unable to do so. But now I'm on a desprite search for these 2 dolls for my sister and I. So if anyone out there knows where I can find these dolls please email me and let me know. It would mean a lot to me. Thank you.

I became fond of the CPK in 1983 when they first come out. Miranda was my first Cabbie. She had long lemon yarn hair in a pony to one side of her head. She worn a pretty ruffled pinafore & dress, white tights & authentic crinkly Pampers diaper. She had a wonderful Baby Powder scent. I used her alot in photographic families & children in my work. I'm now a certified textile restorer technician & I'm taking the delight to become a Cabbage Patch Kid Restorer. And now I'm part of the Cabbage Patch Collectors Club. A work of love. It's as good as working in the garden to relax! Miranda is still working with me. Miranda is now 23 years old and still in diapers! LOL
northern_glenn 04-Apr-2006, 07:05:14 AM
Everyone mentions their CPKs, so here's a new one! I bought one for my daughter in 1985. It was a preemie. I fell in love with them myself, but never collected them as I thought people would think I was crazy! Here I am at 46 years old and still love them, so I started collecting the vintage cabbage patch kids! I have 5 right now, with 5 more coming! I also have 14 newborns from 2005 that were available for 1 day only! I'm still a die hard fan of the 80's dolls though.
Jill G. 23-Apr-2006, 03:05:40 AM
Love them or hate them....mass produced Cabbage Patch Kids have never stopped being made sine 1983. In fact....they have continuously been the #1 selling doll in their category. Whether you love the 22" Soft Sculptured originals from Babyland General Hospital in Cleveland, Gorgia USA or the vintage Coleco (1983-1989), Hasbro Kids (1990-1994), Mattel's (1995-2001), TRU Kids (2001-2005) or the Play Along Kids (2004 to present). You can't deny the popularity of these "Kids" and there place in toy history. Not many toys, much less dolls have the life in them that Cabbage Patch Kids posses. So, millions of adoptive men, woman, boys and girls across the world can't be wrong......Cabbage Patch Kids are here to stay.

Well..even though I was born in the early 90s, I might as well had been an 80s child. My mom had her first child in '81, who is my older brother today. During that time she was so happy with her little baby boy, but it had always been her dream to have a little baby girl. So she went out and bought dolls and toys that she saved in her closet for when her little girl would come along. The years went by and the collection in her closet grew, and she had already had 1 miscarrige by then. Later on, I was born and was given all these 80s toys! Transformers, Strawberry Shortcake dolls, Star Wars action figures, Barbies, My Little Ponies, and tons and tons more. Then amongst all these toys I discovered a cabbage patch doll in her box, with her little outfit on, paci in mouth just staring at me through the cellophane. That was the end of that box. I tore it apart and squeezed my little auburn haired, voilet/gray eyed paci cutie to death! We went everywhere together. At the time I had recieved her, I couldnt read so her birth certificate was disregarded. Later on my mom told me how she and my brother went to Bradlees in 1985 to get some cabbage patch dolls. They went home with one preemie boy for my brother, a blonde 'Kid for my mom, and one for the collection in my mom's closet. To this day, I still have her, and she sits on my dresser and greets me every day. Also she is adorable NOT ugly.

I always hated cpks.whenever we would go to the store i would point at them and pretend to puke.then one day around christmas,i saw her.the cutest, prettiest, most adorable cpk ever!!!!!! her name was tara.she had dark brown hair and brown eyes, light skin, and the most friendly yet mischievious smile.if she had had some glasses, she would have looked just like me! i told my mom all about this doll. then at christmas eve i oppend the cpk shaped box.inside i found MY doll.if my brother so much as touched it,he got chased and hunted down.when my friend, michelle, heard about my cpk she got one for herself.she got a little boy.his name was pablo! he was also very cute!pablo and tara were the best of friends. i never really saw my friend other than school ,so tara didn't get to see pablo very much.so michelle said we should bring our cpks to school.i was sort of shy of what other kids would say or think about my little tara.but i didn't want to make my friend look babyish by being the only one in school with a cpk.so the next day, we brought our dolls to school.alot of the boys made fun of them and said they were ugly.so michelle started mooning the boys with pablo.she would pull his pants down below his cheeks, face his butt tword them and say in a high pitched voice, moooooooooon!!!!!!! it was funny.i didn't do the "mooon" thing with tara 'cause....she was a girl!!!duh! michelle still has pablo and a couple more cpks. i still have tara and 3 more cpks. also, there's this one on ebay i really want.but no matter how many cpks i get, tara will always be my first! oh yeah, this happend when i was 9. this memorie isn't very old because i'm only, like 11 now.i just couldn't wait to tell people about MY cabbage patch kid. PS.i don't hate cpks any more, I LOVE THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I went to Toy's R Us when I was 6 years old with my aunt and older cousin. It took a while to find Lisa Jo, becuase I wanted her with braids just like I had. When I was 10 we moved to Nicaragua, and I lost her astronaut outifit. Since then, she still travels with me on long plane trips to the States. She is my only daughter and has been very loved. Now that I'm 26 and a bride-to-be, I will be getting married on her 20th birthday- october 1st! I have to find her a nice dress...

I was 9 years old when I got my first cabbage patch-a bald headed boy named Rafeal Monroe--My mom searched and searched for him for weeks and weeks for my birthday. Finally she found him and ironically enough he had the same birthday as me September 1. I still have him today 23 years later and he now has approximately 130 brothers and sisters as I am a FINATIC collector.

I was born in 1991, after the main CPK blast, and my 1st earliest memory of the CPK dolls is seeing them at some toy store or another, getting freaked out, going home, and having these horrible dreams about those creepy lil things. My second memory of these dolls was when I walked into the sitting room, and my parents were watching the news, and they were talking about how some CPK doll ate a little kid's hair. They still creep me out :( No offence.

I had a girl doll named Bridgette. I remember using a pen to draw an "incision" on her stomach and then I used nail polish to "sew" her up. I became a nurse when I "grew up." Now I have bought three CPK's for my 8 month old daughter Abigail. All 3 have her name is different spellings. It is so much fun searching for the doll that has a name that is the same as a little girl or boy that you know. I am still searching for a Tom, Tommy or Thomas.
Shelly 14-Jul-2006, 04:38:56 AM
My sister had one of these , Roxanne its name was and it came with an adoption card thing ,Mum sent it off and a year later it got a birthday card.I wanted one but my dad said i should get out and get a job , i was 17 at the time :0)

I had a boy cabbage patch doll his name was louis he had auburn brown hair I absolutely loved him anyways when I was three my aunty put brown dry dog food in his nappy when I wasn't looking and when I went to change his nappy I thought he had actually soiled himself and started showing all family what he could do hahaha for a few years I thought he was real. I also remember a Cabbage Patch Kids cartoon in the mid 1980's and I don't know the name of it and would love to find out what it's called does anyone remember it at all I know the story line was some one was trying to kidnap one of the cabbage patch kids. If anyone remembers it can you email me the name at tenneale_kelly@hotmail.com
tenneale 03-Aug-2006, 03:42:39 PM
I just find it funny to read how people hate Cabbage Patch Kids or find them creepy. I had three of them (all girls), and I don't know if I still have any down in my parents' basement. I still am a little mad at myself for giving them haircuts, save the preemie.
JEM 25-Aug-2006, 12:12:59 AM
My mom got my sister and I CPK when they first came out. We both still have ours, but mine is short a passifier and some clothes and my sisters had an accident and it now has a hole in it's cheek. About a year ago my grandmother gave me another one that is still in the box! It's a 1982 doll with red hair in pony tail brads with a white headband, blue eyes and a purple jogging suit on that has a little kitten on the shirt. Apparently it was one of the first CPK after the name was changed from "Little People". I am actually thinking of selling her. Now that I am older and have no place for her in my home, I would like to find someone who will take care of her. To the editor, the Garbage Pail Kids was a different company that tried to use the CPK likeness to make money. The creator of the CPK quickly sued them and it was settled out of court and the Garbage Pail Kids had to change their items so they wouldn't be infringing on copyright laws.
Erin Lawson 28-Aug-2006, 05:54:43 PM
How funny, CPK - my sister and I got one for Xmas once - they had bright yello plastic dummy's and they came with their own birth certificate that you had to send off to Cabbage Patch world.. I also had a tape with all of their songs on it.. I still to this day know the words word for word... "Cabbage Patch kids growing in the garden cabbage Patch kids growing in the sun and the most amazing thing about a cabbage patch kid.... each one grows to be a special on..." ha ha I'm now 26!!

Today is the 5th Sept 2006 and I have just received my first cabbage patch doll. I got her from ebay it says 1978, 1982 on the tag and has a brown sig on bum. She is sooo cute. She has a white and blue dress on with little socks and bottees. A white bonnet and a dummy. I always wanted one of these when I was younger so I am reliving my childhood now. I dont know her name so got to think of one for her, she came all the way from America. I am so happy to have one now ( a little bit sad for a married 27 year old with 2 childrren I know)
Nicole 05-Sep-2006, 11:46:11 AM
OK, got my first CPK in 1986 she had a really weird name when I got her , so I sent my certificate to "Babyland General Hospital" and they kindly changed her name to Natalie Jane which I wanted to call her. I love CPK?s and have 4, my 1st and 2 new-ish ones and last year my husband and I went to USA to Babyland General Hospital where I bought a lovely soft sculpture kid. Sad I know, as I am 27 yrs old and still a big kid! But hey!, I?m happy :) Long live the Cabbage Patch Kids!!!!
Becky 05-Sep-2006, 01:46:41 PM
Does anyone know how you can find out the name of the dolls as I have purchased 2 of them from 1978,1982 but they dont have their papers? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Nicole 08-Sep-2006, 10:16:08 AM
Hi Nicole! You could always try contacting someone at the official website www.cabbagepatchkids.com, maybe they can help you(?) :) Becky
Becky 08-Sep-2006, 11:14:55 AM
To Becky Many thanks for that I will give it a go. Just bought my 3rd preemie baby today!!! Will have to stop looking. A bit sad for a 27 yr old. Best regards Nicole x
Nicole 08-Sep-2006, 09:23:07 PM
To Nicole..Good luck finding your babies!! If you?re sad, that makes the two of us as I am 27 too!! There?s just something irresistable about CPK?s and the excitement of bringing a box home, with a CPK in it waiting to be loved!! Iam such a softy!!! ;)
Becky 12-Sep-2006, 01:32:10 PM
For Becky and Nicole - if you two are sad, hate to think what that makes me - I am late 50's but still a kid at heart I am totally smitten with these dolls, have seven including two babies (my grown up sons think I am losing it!). Maybe, but the dolls sunny cheery little faces are an instant lift!

My sister and I each had cabbage patch dolls (I had 2) and loved them! We used to always join up with our friends and their dolls for birthday parties when the dolls had their birthdays. Surprisingly many often shared the same birthdays! At some parties we had up to 7-8 dolls present. We still have pictures of them all blowing out the candles (of course with the help of their mummies! aka: us!) They always had wierd names, but I think that added to the charm for us.

I never really like the look of these but a few girls at school & friends sisters had them. Were these one of the first "must have" toys which were in short supply before Xmas. I remember the Turtles, Tracy Island, Buzz Lightyear & the Nintendo Wii causing perental panic. It was lucky my sister was too young for them & the initial craze had died down by the time she was old enough.

I was quit small when the dolls came out. My mom said that she couldn't buy me the origial ones that came out cause stores were all sold out. So she had to buy me one that was just like the original. I was like six years old at the time. Maybe five...Anyways, it didn't matter to me...I still loved it. I collected about like 2 or 3 after that. I think I might still have them somewhere.

I was about 7. And I wanted a cabbage patch doll to bad, We were really poor, my grandmother made me a deal that i read with her so many books to her and she will buy one for me. every day we would read and she would put points on the point chart. It seemed like it took forever to read enough books to receive it. I finally got it and still have my wonderful cabbage patch doll. i am 30 years old. that was the first thing I work for. For someone else it may just be a doll. but I treasure it so.

When I was 3(which was 12 years ago) My mom bought me a cpk baby that went potty. I thought she was so cool. I loved her. Now that I am older i didn't like it that much because she was all plastic. Then my best friend Courtney's mom went to Georgia and the went to the hospital. For courtney her mom got her a preemie that was completely hand made. She was so cute and i went back into the love for them. later on I bought one of the modern babies that was dirty blonde named ashlyn marie and I loved her but my favorite was the blessed day my aunt gave me her 1985 brunette kid and blonde baby. I thought they were wonderful. My aunt couldn't find the birth certificates so courtney and i renamed them hannah rose for the blonde, and cali michelle for the brunette. Right now they are next to me and ashlyn is with her aunt courtney and her baby logan pheobe for next week we are going to georgia and going there. We are so excited and want to leave to go now but we can't drive.:(

I think they are adorable! I can't remember when I got mine, but it is a bald baby with a white one-piece suit. There are little flaps on the suit so it's hands can be exposed or covered to keep warm, and underneath she is wearing a little cloth diaper. That doll has a very distinct sweet smell that is quite comforting to me *^_^*

If I think rightly, my sister had on of these, and it didn't half have a hard head. I remember whacking my sister wih her cabbage patch doll when she annoyed me, simply because the head was hard. What a cow I was!!!

I got my first Cabbage Patch Kid when I was 12 for Christmas. He was a bald baby boy with pacifier. I named him Joshua. I knew I was getting him and took him out of the box right away and had him on my lap while I opened my other presents. My Mum had no problem getting a doll for me and my sister. I remember going to the shops, seeing a wall of cabbage patch kids to choose from and not a kid or parent in site. I am 34 now and still have Joshua.
