Bands and musicians BANDS

Electric Light Orchestra (ELO)

One of the best bands from the 70s and 80s and even today their music still sounds fresh and new.

The first record I ever bought by them was "Living Thing" way back in 1976. Other hit records followed like the excellent "Rockaria", "Can't Get it Out of My Head", "Turn To Stone", "Mr Blue Sky" and many others that made the 70s great.

In the 80's one of their finest LP's "Time" and was one of my most listened to LP's in all of the 80's. "Don't Walk Away", "Ticket To The Moon" and "All Over The World" still remain on my playlists even today.

Electric Light Orchestra was made up of Jeff Lynne (vocals, guitar, piano, synthesizer); Kelly Groucett (vocals, bass); Richard Tandy (piano, Clavinet, synthesizer),Bev Bevan (drums, percussion).

I remember being somewhat surprised listening to their song Telephone Line when it first came out. The lyrics had doo wap blue days black NIGHTS....I heard it as black KNIGHTS which was a popular condom brand back in the day - so I (for a few days) genuinely thought they were singing about condoms!

My sister had a thing about their song 'Wild West Hero'- she recorded it from the Top 40 back in '78 and played it over and over again! My own personal favourites are their cover version of Little Richards' 'Roll Over Beethoven' and 'Don't Bring Me Down' (which I believe was covered by Status Quo). 'The Diary of Horace Wimp' remains a favourite on BBC Radio 2 in the small hours. There was a rumour that their album 'Secret Messages' contained Satanic messages when played backwards, a claim that was rubbished by Jeff Lynne.

Well, my memory of The Electric Light Orchestra only goes back two years, so instead of remembering this this fabulous Brit band, I am currently a HUGE fan of theirs! My dad introduced me to the magnetic music of ELO two years ago, when I was fourteen, and I have been obsessed with eveything having to do with ELO ever since. I think that Jeff Lynne is an incredible songwriter and a great inspiration!
