This quiz has been going for longer than ... well put it this way Jeremy Paxman (yes him from newsnight) was on it when he was younger and now he's presenting it.
University Challenge was first broadcast in 1962 and then was canceled in 1987, only for the BBC to have a pang of guilt and re-commission it in 1994.
It features 3 students from 2 separate universities who answer fiendishly difficult questions - always beginning with a "starter for ten" - which became something of a catchphrase in the 70's and for the Blackadder generation of comedians - Stephen Fry was on it too, you know. Oh yes. and it even featured in the Young Ones - when Rick Mayall was a whipper snapper. .
It was originally presented by the wonderfully named Bamber Gascoigne, and I think we have all at one time spent time watching, just for the ego boost of maybe getting one or two questions, and just to be utterly amazed that anyone could know as much as the young boffins do (whilst being quietly complacent that while we're not brain boxes, at least we have a girlfriend).
