The Young Ones

This was written by Ben Elton, and was a comedy show about 4 students living together. Rik, Viv, Neil and Mike were the students, and the show was mainly about how they didn't get along. Rik was an anarchist, Viv a punk, Neil a hippy and Mike was a "business man."

Alexei Sayle also appeared regularly as the landlord, and the show often featured a live music act.

Bit rude for me when I initially watched it at about age 9, but ace a few years after when my parents weren't in the same room.

There's a limit to how often you can find somebody screaming 'VIVIAN, HAVE YOU FARTED?' amusing- never thought it funny, just extremely irritating and arsey. Both Mayall an Edmondson are actually much better as straight actors than comedians- I remember watching a docu-drama about the Chernobyl disaster on the 20th anniversary back in '06, when Edmondson played the part of the power-station manager who, wracked with terrible guilt, eventually hanged himself. Powerful and moving stuff.

Can you actually HAVE a socialist worker, I thought they just stood on corners trying to ferment revolution, a shame as they couldn't organise a sh*g in a brothel, but always good for a laugh....

I was at exactly the right moment for this show. I was doing the Uni thing, and we all religiously watched this in the common-room. When the University Challenge episode was being shown, the posh kids in the car included Stephen Fry, Emma Thompson and Ben Elton, who declaimed "My daddy bought me the Socialist Workers Party!" Cue affectionate laughter at the one guy in the room who was a socialist worker.

Pregnant. Vivian, being extrememly flatulent, is under the impression his oversized stomach maybe down to something else. Lying flat on his back on the kitchen table and legs in the air, he commands Rick to: "Get the stirrups, I'm having a baby!" After which he gives off the loudest and longest fart!

My favourite episode has to be the University Challenge one where Vivian gets his head knocked off on the train (NOTICE: PLEASE DO NOT STICK YOU HEAD OUT OF THE WINDOW..... VIVIAN: I WONDER WHY?.......) Griff Rhys-Jones as "Bambi" Gascoine and the contestants literally on top of each other - not just a camera split. Very early showing of Emma Thompson too.
