Beech Nut Chewing Gum

You might remember getting this out of the old chewing gum vending machines outside your local sweet shop? Beech Nut brand had a sweet peppery taste and came in little oblong packs, dragees not sticks, usually on sale for around 2p or 5p a pack in the mid 70s. I remember Beechnut chewing gum. I always used to get a small pack after Sunday School from the vending machine by the bus stop. It was my once a week treat. There were 5 dragees in the pack so it lasted almost all week.

Some of the Beech Nut vending machines also had a section for YZ gum which had an owl logo (wise head). Same deal with a free one on the fourth.

My father owned a sweet shop when I was a kid and I remember him having a vending machine with this gum outside his shop, and I remember that there was a 1 in 4 chance of 2 packets for the price of 1, as the machine was programmed to give 2 packs every fourth turn. BTW Although my dad had a sweet shop I was never spoilt with lots of sweets, in fact, he was quite strict and was rationed. I did not like it t the time of course, but now as an adult, I am glad he did not spoil me this way.

Yeah! The vending machine outside the shop! Big black knob. I think it was an old penny...

My Mum used to chew this all the time ! I am guessing because she smoked and didn't want her breath to smell of tobacco !

Oh yeah! I always preferred these with their crisp shell compared to ordinary strips of chuddy like Wrigleys. Was kind of disappointed the first time I tried it because I wanted it to actually be beech nut flavour! What about Dentyne gum? Tiny individually wrapped gum with a weird flavour.

I remember this - it was very hard and the gum was like a sweet where you had to suck off the hard outer shell before you started chewing. My mum would get one for me when we came out of our local corner shop. You got about 4 in a pack. I'd forgotten about the free one every 4th time!

They go back a lot further than the 70's! I remember them in the 50's on a wall mounted vending machine outside our local sweet shop. They were the magnificent sum of one old penny then, and with every fourth vend, you got a free extra pack!
