High Chaparral

As a young teenage girl, I remember being absolutely glued to the TV each week when "The High Chaparral" was on. And no, it was not just because Mark Slade, who played Billy "Blue" Cannon was rather cute!

The weekly adventures of the Cannon family, led by Big John Cannon, had me captivated. Usually there was a pesky Indian or bandit involved somewhere in the storyline.

I still remember my father asking each week how on earth the cattle got any food, as the ranch was set in Tuscon, Arizona, and seemed devoid of any grass to graze! I also recall there was also that lone bird, (A Whippoorwill?) which could be heard mournfully twittering most weeks too.

The stirring David Rose theme music used to get to me too, and brings back memories of that great western television series if I hear it today.

I agree, even thought it was a very special western I watched High Chaparral mainly to see the "special" bond I felt existed between Blue(Mark) and Buck (Cameron) on and off the screen!

The High Chaparral was and is the best TV western ever. I loved watching it, and couldn't wait for the next episode. For me, Mark Slade (Blue Boy) was a VERY important reason to watch. When I was watching I really believed there was a young man in Arizona called Billy Blue Cannon. Mark Slade is such a great actor! OK, his being very cute didn't hurt either.
