Armchair Thriller

If you were six years old (as I was in 1979), then you are sure to remember "Armchair Thriller". It had really scary opening credits of a horrible, contorted face looming over a blood-soaked armchair. This was show at around 8pm (then repeated in the afternoons). I don't think the TV schedulers were aware that any children might have been watching at the time, and the word "watershed" was obviously foreign to them. Thanks for all the nightmares ITV! How many other young children did your programme terrify?

i have been reading all the postings and am suprised and perplexed at some of the rantings! I remember watching the armchair thriller series as a kid, i was 10 in 79. Yes they were scary but in an inteligent and imaginative context. A lot was left to the viewers imagination, rather than actual visual violence and offences. Do the people who have left negative comments actually watch tv now, i wonder? Are they aware of what the kids of today are subgected to via the media. And then if they cant watch it on the tv, dvd, satelite, mobile phone etc, they can always re-inact violence on thier games consoles! Hence to say i loved the series, ive turned out to be a well rounded, law abiding individual who would much rather her children watch these imaginative programmes than the stuff they are drip fed in every shape and form, like it or not!nowdays.

YES! I was 12 in 1979 and was allowed to stay up and watch this.....I loved the music and taught myself to play it on the piano and still can play it today! Me and my sister particularly remember the episode where there's a realy creepy man who's got a poodle and he calls her 'Tina' in a really weird voice....I'm sure the dog's name was Tina or have I got it wrong?

I remember this, I was about 7 or 8 and the opening titles and theme tune that scared me ( i could not stay in the room when it was on). I believe the chair was only used when previewing a new story. I've just watched a DVD of Rachael in danger, the actual story wasn't to scary but that theme music still freaked me out. This was also shown in the afternoons when the 8pm slot was way to early.

The Poodle episode is the only one that still Haunts me! I’ve forgotten all the other ones. Every time I see a white Poodle I get a flashback of seeing the white fur covered in Blood!

I remember the shadow of the man sitting on the chair in the opening credits. His hands woulod widen to claw-like horror in time to the music and i'd scream. I was about 6.

I'm hoping the rest will follow Jemima, as 2 of the Armchair Thriller stories were produced by defunct Southern Television in 1980, which is now apparently owned by a U.S. company. We've had a 30 year wait but it's been worth it!
