Baby Alive
Baby Alive :
Baby Alive was a realistic baby doll originally made by Kenner in 1973. Kenner also made successful toys such as the Easy-Bake Oven and Spirograph. The Baby Alive doll came in just her sunsuit and hair ribbon and had a whole set of accessories so that you could look after her.
Most important were the nappies/diapers because Baby Alive doll actually ate and drank like a real baby. When you gave Baby Alive her diet of a special food mixture and water it would inevitably end up in her nappy so that you could have ‘fun’ changing it.
Care was needed when mixing the food mixture, especially in the newer models and you would have to mix up a packet of Baby Alive food with exactly 15ml of water for it to work properly. As well as the sachets of food, Baby Alive came bundled with a special dish and spoon as well as a small water bottle. After you gave her some food you needed to give her a small amount of water to ‘wash it through’.
When you gave Baby Alive a teaspoon of the special food mixture, rather than just wash down she would ‘chew’ her food with a realistic mouth movement. You could also make her suck her thumb by pressing her thumb against her lower lip for a few seconds. When you ran out of special Baby Alive food and nappies it was possible to purchase the sachets and spare nappies separately.

my daughter had one of these and i lost count of the amount of people who thought, as she carried it through the airport in a car seat, that it was real.

I got my first baby alive in the 1980's I remember seeing her box at the toy store for a long time until my mom finally got her for me. She had a pink suit, pigtails, a bottle, a spoon and plate and the funny smelling powder food! I thought she was the coolest! She had a lever in the back to pull to make her chew. I liked her so much a few years later I got the electronic baby alive that came out, but the toddler one that stands up and has a potty. These dolls are GREAT for children I wish they would still make them as nice as they used to. I know recently they made one and it wasn't that great

I was SOO addicted to this doll. Always got my mom to buy diapers for her LOL. and those weird formula food mixtures. She was such a cute dolly. My friend came over one day though, and fell on her neck. Her head popped off and a long pink tube was connected from her body to her head. It was kinda scary..but I still love dolls!

Yes Baby Alive has been around since at least the 70's. I had one when I was about 5, I'm now 38. My mother had put the bateries in it before wraping her up and putting her under the Christmas tree. When I opened her up and her mouth started moving and making that motorized sound it scared the cr*p out of me and I threw the doll across the room and was afraid of it for years. I dont think I played with it till I was 7 or 8 years old.

I loved this doll. Baby alive amd baby shivers are the only dolls I remember as a child. I got her when I was 5 and I loved her! I do have one disgusting memory of chewing up tic tacs and feeding them to her when I ran out of the powder food. Man, was theat nasty!

I remember baby alive so well (im now trying to track one down) i was around 8yrs old (now 37yrs old) i wanted this doll so bad and my birthday was coming and i was SO DISAPPOINTED when i didnt get her so i waited another 7 months (being Xmas ) thinking id get her but it was to be my following birthday and id given up hope of ever getting her (i had a bit of a horror for a mum who doesnt 'DO' toys!!)anyway i LOVED her so much and had only had her about 4months and had looked after her with so much care, and then one day my mum came home in a mood and in a temper she saw my doll in my arms and throw her down the stairs and broke not only my heart but the doll as well. She did however box her up and sent a letter back to the maker and said "BABY IS NO LONGER ALIVE,SHE IS DEAD" but obviously didnt mention the stair incident, and about 3weeks pasted and hey presto i got a new one with all new bits, food etc,i was so happy but she would never replace my first one,(sad i know, and thats me im talking about!) however years later my wonderful mother GOT RID of all my toys & dolls, which was mean of her because i looked after all my dolls/toys and again she broke my heart in doing so,now i have 2 little girls and would have loved them to played with my Baby Alive and Sindy dolls,so now im on a quest to find BABY ALIVE which would date back to approx 1978, and now im looking i didnt realise they made different ones (slightly look different in face and hair) the 1982 one's look different to my one. anyone out there got one they loved and now dont want.....?

Definitely. The baby food, the bottles, and the diapers. Yuck! I got my first Baby Alive doll in 1974 and around the same time, I remember baby brother was just out of diapers. Mom gave me some of his old cloth diapers with some diaper pins and rubber pants to put on the doll. No wonder I was good at changing diapers when I babysat.

Sadly my Baby Alive was neglected after a while. Not being a fan of baby dolls, I guess the novelity wore off relatively quickly. I imagine that she was left somewhere after being fed and was not properly cleaned up (or cleaned out) because my last memory of her was with maggots and mom throwing her in the trash. TRAGIC!!!!! (now that I look back at it)

I remember my Baby Alive. She was one of my favorite dolls ever. Unfortunately, one day I decided it would be fun for us to swim together, and she stopped working after that.
Allison 22-Mar-2006, 06:17:28 AM
Allison- I had a similar experience with my baby alive doll! I took her for a "bath" in my friend's pool and needless to say she didn't work anymore. I used to try to sleep with her in my bed but that could get very painful seeing how hard-bodied/headed she was- also her little pinky finger sticking hurt when you rolled over it! I love that doll though, even after she stopped eating. I had the 80s version of the doll- I got here when I was probably about 8 and at age 23 she's still one of my favorite dolls.

When I was about 5, I BEGGED my mother for a Baby Alive doll. She tells me that I made her a grand promise: I would never ever ask for anything ever again if she would only get me a Baby Alive doll. Well, she did get me the doll, and I was overjoyed. And apparently, I was "true to my word" as far as my Mum was concerned: it was a very long time after that that I eventually asked for another toy... Baby Alive was wonderful to play with and care for: the funny-smelling and colored food, changing her diapers, etc. and to this day, I still remember the rubbery plastic smell of her "skin." Sometimes I encounter a rubber/plastic product that contains the same chemical odor, and it brings back such fond memories. Never thought I'd be praising plastic chemicals as a source of nostalgic happiness! :)

I had a great report card when I was 8 years old and the only thing I really wanted was my baby alive! I loved that doll, she was the best, all the neighborhood girls wanted my Baby Alive! She had gone through many changes while I had her... haircuts, "makeup" She was broken for awhile... and I recently threw her away a few years ago while I was going through some old toys. I will always remember that doll!

I remember it was Christmas morning! I opened the present that contained my brand new Baby Alive. I pulled the doll out and seen it was an African American doll and looked stunned. "Mom she's black." "No honey, she's Mexican" hahahahh thanks Baby Alive for making such a funny memory.

I had a baby alive when I was a little girl. I am 33 years old now and she still is the most favorite doll I ever had. I remember my aunt's boyfriend didn't believe she would pee and poop, so took off her diaper, put her on his lap...and she peed. I was devasted when I left her in the front yard and my Dad ran over her head with the car. I am now busting my rump trying to find one for my 7 yr old daughter.

I am forty this year and still have my baby alive. I loved her that much could not part with her, this year I have bought my 5 year old daughter one and what a good buy. I got mine out to show my daughter and to my amazement it still works. I have had her since 1974 approx and she is made by Palitoy

Got this doll after begging for months! Took her everywhere, even took her to the local park and swung her in a toddler swing like a mommy. :D I remember when the disposible diapers ran out I carefully folded cloth ones from cut up old white T-shirts and fastened them with safety pins. Mom gave me her old wooden doll cradle from her own childhood and Baby Alive slept in it every night for a long time.

I am going through some bags I stored several years ago and have 4 Baby Alive's here - but no food, diapers etc. I have put new batteries in and 'some water'? but nothing has happened.
I would like to sell these and don't know the best way to go about it apart from ebay which I have taken a dislike to for some reason or other!..
3 are in excellent condition
There are 2 - 1990
1 1991 with a speaker on front of tummy.
And on older one with soft arms and soft cheeks - which I assume blow out
I have dresses with them too

I got my Baby Alive doll sometime in the 70's. When I used up the last packet of baby food I fed her my bacon sandwich. I was really upset when I discovered she could no longer soil her nappy or the potty. I guess I then created 'Baby Blocked Up'!

Lol hey i still have an original baby alive, it's in dads loft but along with a lot of other toys it will be making an appearence soon as we clear out the loft. It was from about 1973/74 i know its ok as i kept most of my toys nice only other jealous kids sometimes spoilt things of mine lol. i will more than likely be selling it. I'm not quite sure if i still have the original bowl etc.

I still have this doll in my garage. It was an awesome doll, the new ones look stupid. I used to love feeding my baby alive doll that sachet food.
