Rockliffe's Babies

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Under-rated cop series set in Merseyside. Rockliffe was a scruffy, grumpy old git with a crack team of policemen and women working for him.

Needless to say that they always got their criminal. Particularly loved Joe McGann in it as the one who always got the wrong end of the stick. Also had a brilliant signature tune.

Ran from 1987-88. The 'babies' of the title refers to the policemen and women who were inexperienced or had just completed their training.

Not sure who did the theme tune, but I remember one of the verses: 'Rock-a-bye baby, Now ain't it a shame, Dad's in arrears And Mum's on the game...' I thought that the 'babies' of the title were a specially-trained bunch of street kids who helped Rockliffe in his crime-fighting, and that was what the main focus of the drama was. It was one of the few TV dramas aimed specifically at adult teenagers as oppose to under-16s.

I LOVED Rockliffe's Babies. Had a major crush on Bill Champion (PC David Adams) and am now hunting the web trying to find copies of it somewhere to watch again. Thinking back it was pretty cheesy at times, but I loved Paul the fat Welsh copper. He ended up with a burst lip in one episode after some Chinese guys had done really dreadful kung fu and smacked him in the face with a crispy duck.
