Opportunity Knocks

Hughie Green presented the talent show Opportunity Knocks from 1956 through to 1977. Thousands of hopefulls auditioned for the show and of those who appeared on the show only a few ever went on to become famous such as Les Dawson, Freddie Starr, Little and Large, and Frank Carson.

Opportunity Knocks was a more pleasant if slightly mediocre version of New Faces and did not have a cruel and ascerbic panel of judges.

In the 1980s the show was revived with the late Bob Monkhouse as the host.

I was always put off watching it by Hughie Green- Evadne's right, he was a nasty piece of work, a very unpleasant thug who was cruel to his children. I don't blame Paula Yates for being distraught when she discovered that he was her father, there was something downright Satanic about him- he didn't die a moment too soon.

"Tammy Jones...inging to this day and just as good. How many other 'stars' of the show can say this, more than thirty years later!" Tom Jones isn't doing too bad ... Engelbert Humperdink used to get upset because he passed the auditions several times, but didn't make the show.

I remember a little boy called Neil Reid singing Mother of Mine or something similar. My friends and I used to impersonate Lena singing ''Ma, he's making eyes at me''. Ahhhh....memories.

The late Lena Zavarone appeared on Hughie's show at the age of 9-ish, with the song, 'Mama, he's makin' eyes at me'. She and Bonnie Langford went to the same dance school apparently, and were either good friends, or staunch rivals. Lena Zavarone developed anorexia nervosa and sadly passed away a short time later. R.I.P.
