Catchphrase
Catchphrase :
Originally hosted by Roy Walker, Catchphrase was that gameshow where contestants had to identify a well known phrase by watching a huge computer screen.
It'd have clues on the screen like the word TROUBLED drawn in ace watery graphics, and the word BRIDGE stretched over it. Contestants were well known for having no comprehension of any well known phrases.
To the likes of you or I, the phrase "Bridge Over Troubled Water" might be a good place to start, whereas they'd buzz in and blurt out "WATERY TROUBLE" or "WASH AWAY YOUR TROUBLES" or some such random wordage.
And at the end, people had to identify 5 catchphrases in 60 seconds to win loads of cash.

The original fiendishly difficult puzzle,
now with solution guide
The original fiendishly difficult puzzle, invented by Erno Rubik in Hungary and one of the biggest toy crazes ever. In 1982 Hawkin's Bazaar was the first to bring a few cases of the Rubik's Cube to England. Unfortunately 25 years ago we were very small and it wasn't long before a much larger company had the exclusive rights to distribute in the UK. We are very pleased to be offering it again! And now includes a new seven step solution guide.

About Hawkin's Bazaar
Hawkin's Bazaar has been providing you with unusual gifts, toys and gadgets since 1973. Originally a local toy shop at the Hawk Inn (hence the name), Hawkin's Bazaar now sells things you thought had gone forever and things you never even knew existed. They bring you Pin Art, Morph, Rubik's Cube, Big Trak, Space Hoppers and much more.
Also remembered...

Basically there were two hand-glove puppet spiders called Itsy and Bitsy that were the stars of the show. Paperplay, produced by Thames TV in 1979, had a few minute slot on childrens' hour and it was on TV when Play School was popular. They used to make things like pen holders out of toilet roll tubes etc. It was presented by Susn Stranks and completely set against a black background so no one could see Itsy and Bitsy hanging from the puppet strings.

Roy Walker was the original long time presenter, he was then replaced by Nick Weir (who broke his leg on stage) and then finally Mark Curry. One of the things I remember most was that most of the animations featured a Robot called Mr Chips. After the commercial break, there was always the Ready-Money Round, where there was no bell so contestants could try to win more. Phrases I remember would be "Say what you see, If you see it say it" or "It's good but it's not right"

CATCHPHRASE was one of the best gameshows in the UK. I was sadly diserpointed to hear Roy Walker left the show in 1999. I was 2 years old when it first aired on TVS in 1986 and i grew up with the show. I really like the original theme tune. Mr. Chips is a nice little character, who should get his own spin-off cartoon show. I think that would be nice.

"If you say what you see....say it" Class. Who remembers the famous out-take when Mr Chips seemed to be doing something a wee bit rude? :@)

I was a contestant/winner on Catchphrase (with Roy Walker), about 10 yrs ago! I was a good laugh. Roy was abit of a diva though. The warm up man was Ted Robbins who was lovely - we had a better time with him (especially when we had a few beers that evening). I cringe though when its re-run on Challenge !

Catchphrase was an institution in our house! Watching it with all the family (aunts, uncles, grandparents) was a Saturday evening tradition! It's wasn't the same when they revived it with that Nick bloke who fell down the stairs. BRING BACK ROY!!
