Bazooka Joe Bubble Gum

Bazooka Joe was a large stick of pink American bubble gum that can still be purchased today. Around the large sticks of gum was wrapped a small comic strip starring the adventures of Bazooka Joe and his friends and advertising for cool toys and products you could purchase (although it was always American based and in U.S. dollars even in the UK!).

The gum was very chewy and you could actually get lockjaw in the school playground from trying to cram a whole bar in your mouth at once! It tasted nice though!

Bazooka Joe himself, as an advertising character, wore an eye patch lending him a very distinctive appearance.

Bazooka Joe gum are still being made but they're smaller than what they used to be back in the 70's/80's. They still contain a small cartoon strip inside as well.

I used to live near the factory that in Romford where they used to make the bubblegum. As kids after school we used to say to each other "come on lets raid the bubblegum factory?" we went through the hole in the fence next to the park, when nobody was about we would get armfulls of the comic strips which were on rolls. We then spend time cutting them all up and posting them all back to get the free gifts!! eventually they sussed it, coz all the local kids were in on it!! hahahah I got pen knives, pens, my cousin has got a gold plated heart after saving up her comic strips, she still has it!!
