Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle
Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle :
For some reason, this was one of the best toys ever. It consisted of a replica Evel Knievel with his bike and a red box with a handle. The rear wheel of the bike plugged into the box and turning the handle spun a flywheel inside the box which both made a very cool revving sounds and spun the rear wheel of Mr. Knievel's bike.
Once you'd got the screaming revving noise of the thing as high pitched as you possibly could you pressed and button and the World's greatest stunt cyclist was unleashed! In the adverts he did wheelies, zoomed across the floor and sped up ramps to jump over a line of toy buses.
In your bedroom, however, he turned a quick half circle before falling over, ran straight into the wardrobe or fell over immediately and lay there wiggling about as the rear wheel spent its momentum and whirred to a stop. I'm not sure why but the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle is still very, very cool and one of the best toys I ever owned.
I remember the cool girls at school having the toy of Evil Knievel's sister, Derry Daring, which came with a pink motorbike and helmet and also did stunt - but obviously no where near as dangerous as Evel Knievel!

oh yeah, this had to be the coolest toy ever, i had one of these and i also had a dragster that was so cool, it even had a parachute come out of the back to slow it down
jinksy69 17-Jun-2004, 04:43:35 PM
My brother had LOADS of these, the dragcar, camper van, race rep bike (that sparked!) and of course the traditional one ... being the dyke in training I was I DESPERATELY wanted one of my own ... but never did get one :(

This toy was fantastic, You could launch it off the top of the stairs and it would still be in one piece. Mind you it could break your grannys ankle due to the fact it traveled at about 50mph (at least thats what it looked like)
Paul 21-Aug-2004, 07:56:22 PM
What a toy! The bike sounded very realistic and it actually went quite a distance and could jump ramps and do wheelies without Evel falling of. Currently searching to see if I can get hold of one of these for my little lad (honest LOL)

I think every child in the world had an Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle. It was the law.
Bruce F 27-Sep-2004, 04:13:22 PM
best toy ever period!!! mine didnt just fall over. it trying to hit the albums i had leaning on books from across the room however was another story. how many of you made ramps out of books and albums, and then hit the ramp about one out of five tries?

The Evel Knievel Stunt Bike was one of many action toys my son Jimmy wanted as a child. I myself thought it was pretty cool until the baseboards got scratched up or it went flying through the room. He had fun and I had ulcers.

SO GOOD. a friend of mine had a big mud puddle in his driveway after every good rain, and Evel spent many afternoons in it after failed jump attempts.

When I was a young boy I had several of the stunt cycles, the red, the white and the blue Knievel action figures and the complete Traveling show truck and trailer with ramps. I had just about everything Evel Knievel was selling. The greatest stunt I was able to perform with the guy was when I set a ramp at the top of the stairs to my basement, put cars, trucks, boats and trains on each of the 18 steps, then placed a sheet of plywood at the bottom of the steps for the landing ramp. Like the great one, the little guy successfully landed and kept on going. I had a friend use a super eight to film it, but that was thirty years ago and no one knows what ever happened to that video. I used to make all my mates lay down in a line up the garden path to see how many Evel could clear. No-one wanted to be on the end just incase he didn't quite make it. Great times!
Wil 23-Jun-2005, 03:49:13 PM
This was one of the few toys that actually delivered. I spent hours at my best friend's house making al sorts of ramps and obstacles for Evel to jump. Great!

I never had one - but had a friend who did. We convinced his 5 year old sister that she would be the ideal 'object' to be jumped over. Needless to say - Evel left the Carpender-album / dictionary ramp - ran straight into her long blonde hair and wound up a good portion of it into the back wheel mechanism... Cue mother cutting Evel and his 'bike from her hair - and an enormous bald patch that seemed to last all summer... much like the enormous red handprint on my rear-end! Halcyon days....

My cousin cranked up my brand new evil knievel stuntcycle and it went in the road and was ran over.I was four years old and very upset. My cousin was much older. He felt bad and bought me a brand new one. He is a great friend and cousin.

Fantastic...although I would always end up with bleeding knuckles.
Nick 13-Apr-2006, 02:06:20 PM
Mr K always used to stop being able to being bent into shape as the wire inside him used to break and it was like broken knees! Still it was one of the best Xmas pressies I got and myself and my mate Peter G used to try to make stunts for him and then try and copy them on our bikes! Many cuts and grazes and bruises later we stopped doing that and got into girls and KISSCHASE and runouts.
johnt 14-Apr-2006, 08:16:36 AM
Answer to question posted here by "Bev" December 05 - the "lady" version of this toy was put out by a different company. It was much smaller, and actually a different design, but equally fun to play with. As I recall, it used an air pump to rev up the little bikes rear wheel. I believe the toy was called the "Debbie Lawler Stunt Cycle". Debbie was a real female motorcycle jumper in the US at the same time as Knievel. She held the world record for female motorcycle jumping, and was often known as "the flying angel". Unfortunately she crashed during a jump in 1975 and was seriously injured. I think that ended her jumping career. although she is still with us today. I had both Evel Knievel and Debbie Lawler toys in about 1974-75. They were the best! Ray (USA)

Drove my Dad nuts my brother and I did. In the dining room near our TV room where pops was relaxing after a hard day. The two of us winding those things up. We used encylcopedias and the boards from our favorite table games (chutes and ladders, candyland) to send the bikes flying everywhere....jumped the Tonka trucks and my GI Joe's. Best time of my childhood....just bought two retro bikes online for my brother and I...can't wait to jump them again!
c.allen 20-Oct-2006, 04:59:56 AM
oh and another thing.....Mom didn't like it when we used to do burnouts on our kitchen floor. The tires were actual rubber and provided for some really cool tracks across the floor.....agreed, Best Toy Ever.....even progressed up to jumping my own bike over our cat house.....(kinda like a dog house, but for cats...;-)

I loved my Evel Stunt bike soooo much, my mum rationed my use of it!!! I also have a memory of the stunt ramp coming in two colours. I had the red one and a mate of mine had a blue one.
Maidenhead Jamie 16-Nov-2006, 10:33:00 AM
answer to bevs question, the name of the female stunt girl was Derry Daring this was also made by ideal. i had a few evel stunt bikes and were amazing.i collect the originals now.
Andy Parkins 25-Nov-2006, 09:38:40 PM
Too cool, I also had some SSP Racers which I used to race against EK's bike !
Wobbygong 11-Dec-2006, 07:09:39 AM
I had an Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle for xma 1 yearm I loved it ......except the only thing I noticed that was wrong with the figure was that he had breasts and was wearing PINK!!, aparently the original figure was missing so someone had the bright idea to use an old doll, and just replace its head and costume, in hopes that I wouldnt notice ....needless to say, I DID!!, I think they called him Derry Daring. Im surprised I wasn't damaged for life. ROFL!!

I had the bike the first year they came out it was so cool. I used to rig my GI Joes on the bike, make him jump actual fireworks.I also had the Snake River Canyen rocket. The bike was better and faster. I broke the snake river rocket when i was jumping it of the roof of my house. It was a great ending to a great toy!!

One of the few things my estranged father managed to give to me (that my mum let me have). By far, the best toy ever. That whirrrrrrr while you turned the handle as fast as you could. I remember nearly fainting tryna get it to the highest pitch possible before releasing it. That feeling when Evel actually didin't fall over! and flew all the way accross the floor and into the wall YEAH!!!!! I loved it. www.brandonwebb.co.uk

Was out shopping yesterday and went into a toy shop called "The Entertainer" They had the Evel Kneivel Stunt Cycle in there. Must have brought it out again.

My dad, Henry Nemeth, was one of the designers of the Evel Kneivel toys at Ideal Toys in Hollis, (Jamaica) New York, in the 1970's! We literally had cases of the motorcycles, cranks, and Evel Knievel figures! I mean, like 20-30 sets! He was always looking to better the mechanism, and always testing them. We loved it! Then we had tons of Debby (or was it Derry?) Daring dolls as well. Does anyone have any links to Ideal Toys? Also, I believe he got to meet Evel when he came to into Ideal. Then, we got to go see the Snake River jump on a special pass at what I think was the Nassau Colisseum. It was a live broadcast, and I remember how exciting it was that we got to go. I have awesome memories of my childhood, and all that we experienced having a father who designed (research & development) toys for Ideal!

Oh man,Just discoverd the evel Knievel stunt set in our local toy shop,Had to buy for my 4 year old son as it was my best toy ever in the whole wide world back in the 70's.I bought it 2 days ago and will give it to him soon HONEST! Iam just bedding in the rear tyre for him.
Mark Willis 13-May-2007, 08:51:17 AM
i was scared whenit happened. kinda cool though:)
Carly 15-May-2007, 05:58:26 PM
SOME OF THE GREATEST TIMES IN THE MID TO LATE 70'S WAS WITH MY TOYS, WHICH WERE ALWAYS BIKES OR RACE CARS. I HAD TWO EVEL KNIEVEL STUNT CYCLES, THE STUNT CHOPPER AND LATER ON THE ROCKET CYCLE WITH THE LIGHT UP JETS. MY DAD AND I MADE MASONITE RAMPS AND USED TO MOVE THEM FURTHER AND FURTHER APART TO SEE HOW FAR WE COULD GET EVEL TO JUMP. I HAD ALL THE POPULAR 70'S TOYS LIKE MEGO, IDEAL, SCALEXTRIC, MATCHBOX AND OTHERS, BUT NOTHING MATCHED THE EXCITEMENT OF OLD EVEL, SO MUCH THAT NOW AT 36 I'M BIDDING ON MOST OF THOSE PARTICULAR TOYS I HAD SO THAT I CAN KEEP THOSE MEMORIES ALIVE AND KICKING.

The Evel Knievel stunt Cycle brings back so many great happy times of my childhood. I used to get my friends over with there evel knievel toys and we would make ramps and jumps and our own stunt shows which were brilliant fun. I even had my mum make me an Evel Knievel suit and customed motorcyle helmet when i was 9. I have been collecting a lot of the original toys as well as the new ones they are just so much fun and the toys are superb. The lady Lisa who's dad created them for ideal was a genius.Thank you sir. My sons and i now do our own Stunt shows one of which is on You tube. I love this do you remember site its excellent.
Rob 28-May-2007, 06:53:46 PM
my husband still has his evil figure with removable helmet and bike, just stationary tosy though; however, evil's jumpsuit is red...everything else I see online he always has a white suit. Anyone know why this is>??
bcknievel 06-Jun-2007, 07:20:46 PM
Hi there! Yes to answer you there were a few diffrent suits made for Evel Knievel. They were in Boxed sets and also there were carded figure sets. The most common with the action toys is the white suit you have which i think is the best anyway. Make sure you go to the EK sites above they are excellent like this site.
Rob 07-Jun-2007, 04:29:15 PM
The greatest toy ever made. I am a major collector of the original toy's and have some of the newer releases as well.
The Derry Daring Stunt Set was made by Ideal Toys and was the EXACT same thing as the EK Toys, except the decals and of course the figure was different. The bike was the same as Evels. Also You didnt push a button on the energizer to release the bike, You revved it up a few times and stopped and it would take off like a bat out of Hell. Here is a link started by a good friend/collector, called the Evel Knievel Toy Museum. You can see every EK and Derry Daring Toy produced by Ideal. To the poster that said her Dad worked at Ideal Toys, we would like to hear some more stories of Your Dads job. I would also like to write a book and find out more info on the original EK Toys from the 70's. Z. F.
Here is the link.

Evel Knievel was brilliant. I remeber launching mine into the fireplace & using Beano annuals as ramps...a real 70s iconic toy (i'm getting a new one from the wife for my birthday!).

HEY, WHAT FUN TO READ THIS STUFF. DEBBIE LAWLER IS MY SISTER. SHE IS ALIVE AND WELL AND THEY ARE THINKING ABOUT BRINGING BACK A DEBBIE LAWLER STUNT JUMPING DOLL AGAIN. UP WITH GIRLS!!!

SCONGROVE 01-Dec-2007, 05:53:39 AM
Wow... I went through so many of these. I always managed to break the energiser through fevered winding of the handle in order to send Evel into orbit off a makeshift ramp. Shame it wasn't as easy to replace the skin off my knuckes ;) Still, Happy days!
AndyB 19-Jan-2008, 11:13:31 PM
Good memories related to this cool little toy,the
best thing was that almost every kids parents could
afford one.Does anyone remember his toy nemasis
who rode the black chopper?,i had one of those also
but cant recollect the exact name of it.
philinluma 11-Mar-2008, 03:06:22 PM
Fantastic toy, virually unbreakable. We'd set up ramps in the garden, set Evel in action pose, and start the winding process. I lost count of the number of times i scraped my knuckles on the slabs while winding the bike to 'turbo' speeds.
Hours of fun, any weather, inside or out. Definately one of my top 5 toys/ games as a kid.
