Noggin The Nog

"In the Lands of the North, where the black rocks stand guard against the cold sea, in the dark night that is very long, the men of the Northlands sit by their great log fires and they tell a tale..."

This was a creepy cartoon that was first produced in black and white and later turned to colour. The stories were based around the central character of Noggin, a simple, good-natured prince. In the early episodes he married an Eskimo princess Nooka and they had a son, Knut.

Classic television!

This was wonderful stuff - I liked the inventor Olaf. I read that Oliver Postgate based his characters on the Lewis chessmen in the British Museum. I went to see them and they looked exactly like Noggin and his crew. Marvellous!

Also with Noggin's friend Thorngson the bold (I'm sure he was based on Willie Rushton) & his arch enemy, his uncle Nogbad the bad. & a green bird called Graculus. Not forgetting, of course, the wonderful voice of Oliver Postgate. I used to watch this while sitting on the dog - well, he didn't seem to mind.
