Toys TOYS

Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle

For some reason, this was one of the best toys ever. It consisted of a replica Evel Knievel with his bike and a red box with a handle. The rear wheel of the bike plugged into the box and turning the handle spun a flywheel inside the box which made both very cool revving sounds and spun the rear wheel of Mr. Knievel's bike.

Once you'd got the screaming revving noise of the thing as high pitched as you possibly could you pressed and button and the World's greatest stunt cyclist was unleashed! In the adverts he did wheelies, zoomed across the floor and sped up ramps to jump over a line of toy buses.

In your bedroom, however, he turned a quick half circle before falling over, ran straight into the wardrobe or fell over immediately and lay there wiggling about as the rear wheel spent its momentum and whirred to a stop. I'm not sure why but the Evel Knievel Stunt Cycle is still very, very cool and one of the best toys I ever owned.

I remember the cool girls at school having the toy of Evil Knievel's sister, Derry Daring, which came with a pink motorbike and helmet and also did stunt - but obviously no where near as dangerous as Evel Knievel!

My cousin cranked up my brand new evil knievel stuntcycle and it went in the road and was ran over.I was four years old and very upset. My cousin was much older. He felt bad and bought me a brand new one. He is a great friend and cousin.

I never had one - but had a friend who did. We convinced his 5 year old sister that she would be the ideal 'object' to be jumped over. Needless to say - Evel left the Carpender-album / dictionary ramp - ran straight into her long blonde hair and wound up a good portion of it into the back wheel mechanism... Cue mother cutting Evel and his 'bike from her hair - and an enormous bald patch that seemed to last all summer... much like the enormous red handprint on my rear-end! Halcyon days....

This was one of the few toys that actually delivered. I spent hours at my best friend's house making al sorts of ramps and obstacles for Evel to jump. Great!

I used to make all my mates lay down in a line up the garden path to see how many Evel could clear. No-one wanted to be on the end just incase he didn't quite make it. Great times!

When I was a young boy I had several of the stunt cycles, the red, the white and the blue Knievel action figures and the complete Traveling show truck and trailer with ramps. I had just about everything Evel Knievel was selling. The greatest stunt I was able to perform with the guy was when I set a ramp at the top of the stairs to my basement, put cars, trucks, boats and trains on each of the 18 steps, then placed a sheet of plywood at the bottom of the steps for the landing ramp. Like the great one, the little guy successfully landed and kept on going. I had a friend use a super eight to film it, but that was thirty years ago and no one knows what ever happened to that video. SO GOOD. a friend of mine had a big mud puddle in his driveway after every good rain, and Evel spent many afternoons in it after failed jump attempts.

The Evel Knievel Stunt Bike was one of many action toys my son Jimmy wanted as a child. I myself thought it was pretty cool until the baseboards got scratched up or it went flying through the room. He had fun and I had ulcers.
