Clothkits

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Hippie-dippy mail-order clothes company who sold you kits for making smocks, dresses and even dolls. They were always patterned and had the sewing instructions printed on the back of the fabric. The Clothkits doll was called Kitty.

I am now a grandmother and regret not being able to make up kits for my grandchildren. I remember lots of them, particularly an orange and blue coat with hood which my son wore - he's now 35! I would love to get hold of some catalogues to remind me of those hippy times. I have a few but would welcome more!

So sad to hear Clothkits no more. My daughters had lovely pinafores etc and as about to be a new grandma i wondered if they were still available. Went on line and found this wonderful sight. When did Clothkits close?. What a shame it was wonderful. I feel really ancient now !!

I worked for Clothkits in the 70's and 80's - the best job I ever had. I left to have my children, needless to say they were dressed in Clothkits until about age 6. A friend told me today that she had found some unmade kits in her mother's loft which inspired her to enrol on a dressmaking course in 2 weeks time. That's why I am Googling today!

Does anyone remember the wonderful childs coat with the animal print and the small panda and something else in the pockets...some other animal?... i made this as one of my first projects on my new sewing machine for my daughter Stephanie when she was about 5 years old! (now 22). We got so many comments of how wonderful everyone thought it was and we just loved that it was so unique ... i actually thought the company would still be in business and googled it as i fancied making another...how stupid of me to think it would still be around....but i did.... I so would love to make that coat again.... What happened, does anyone know if we can get hold of the old patterns and start it up again!. i would be for it! Anita

I was married in Clothkits in 1974 - a white smock and long blue skirt, both liberally patterned - and my 3 children were dressed in Clothkits from birth till the company closed. We also had Kit and Kitty and the dolls' bedding set - I think they're still in the attic somewhere. The colours were wonderful and adventurous in a time when most children were still dressed so conservatively. Finding this discussion thread has prompted me to get out the old photos and reminisce - wonderful!!

My brother (1 year younger) and I were often kitted out in co-ordinating clothkits gear in the early 70s. My favourites were the shorts and T-shirts. Dad used to cut out the shapes to decorate the T-shirts from the fabric swatches provided and Mum sewed them on! I also made my very own Kit and Kitty dolls with the complete wardrobe. I have treasured these dolls and now as a primary school teacher, Kit and Kitty have become Albert and Annick in our french lessons and are loved by the children in my class!

I too was a Clothkits child (born in 71). I have photos of my mother and I in matching white, purple and burgundy smocks! I remember a pair of purple flared cords with rust coloured print round the hems that I adored and wore until they where round my ankles. Also a needlecord pinafore in a colour I think the catalague described as 'teal'! I had a Kitty and Kit doll and loved that fact that they had an incredible wardrobe of clothes to wear - sunhats, waistcoats etc. He had a funky little satchel too. They also had dolls bedding in a couple of colourways - one called 'Tutti - Frutti' I think! I played with them for years and they are still tucked away safely at my mum's house!

I was going through some old boxes in the storage shed today and came across a couple of old Cloth Kits catalogues. I was so hoping when I googled I would be able to find the company again, I miss it so much
