Clothkits

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Hippie-dippy mail-order clothes company who sold you kits for making smocks, dresses and even dolls. They were always patterned and had the sewing instructions printed on the back of the fabric. The Clothkits doll was called Kitty.

Yay, just searched through wardrobe, low and behold, my clothkit jacket is still there, think it was in the 70s when I made it.

I'm very happy to have found this site. I was a big fan of Clothkits for myself and my daughter (now 26)..I live in the States and ordered many things from the catalogue. Today I am wearing a Clothkits knit acrylic dress which I bought in 1983- it still looks great and is very warm

Clothkits are relaunching in February 2008 at an event called Kids.Modern in London! There is an email link on the www.clothkits.co.uk website that lets you be notified of news... How exciting is that!!!

When I lived in Scotland in the early 70s, I loved Clothkits. I made several outfits--one that I still have (!). When I googled the name, I was hoping that the company was still in production. Now that we are no longer poor students, I could afford to buy more. Thanks for the chance to reminisce about our time lving in the UK. Kathy

I was introduced to Clothkits when I married! Both my new mother and sister in law were avid fans. Living overseas meant we could get sent clothes for the boys as they grew up different from the normal catalogue stuff. Also because of the quality it can be handed down from cousin to cousin. Family clothes to the max. Kay

I used a wide variety of the Clothkits clothes both for myself and then for my children and yes, we had kitty and her clothes, alos the hot water bottle covers. My gardening apron is still in regular use and I have only just had to make a repair to the base of one pocket! What happened to them, has anyone the inspiration and ability to resurrect it?

If only the company still existed for my wee girl, My identical twin sister and I used to wear the same outfit but in different colours there used to be a fight about who got the first finished outfit. Sheena

My sons were born in 1969, 1972 and 1977, and I was a big Clothkits fan. Every new catalogue was awaited with eager anticipation, I would make a (very long) list of everything I wanted and then whittle it down to what I could afford! I have lots of photos of my children wearing Clothkits outfits, especially the dungarees, and we still have Kit (renamed Jack by my son Tom) in a cupboard somewhere. I also knitted them matching jackets and hats. But how I longed to have a little girl to dress in those gorgeous clothes. And alas, now I have my little granddaughter they are no more. Sigh...

My first memory of Clothkits was 1970 when I got married. My niece worr a beautiful coat, hat and muff which,if memory serves me right, was turquoise with white fur fabric lining. When my children came along, I followed my sister's example and sewed quite a few clothkits for both o them and myself. I came across the changing bag last month and I wish I could remember what happened to my daughter's cloth kitty. Lesley

I've often hoped somebody would start up a new Clothkits company. I really liked the 'different' clothes and Inow have my ownsewing machine so would love it even more. I have always had an interest in fabric decoration but don't have any skills in the field. Idon't even have a catalogue to remind myself of the sorts of clothes they were. Be great if we had C21 version.
