Burton's Potato Puffs

Potato Puffs were a sort of crisp manufactured by Burton Biscuits. The came in varieties of Ready Salted, Cheese and Onion and Salt and Vinegar. I'm sure that they have gone out of production now but who knows... if enough people remember them and still want them, there could be a Potato Puff revival!

karenmalkin106-Feb-2014, 09:08:39 PM

Regretfully Burtons have no plans to resume production of Potato Puffs (and their cousin Chip Straws). The closest I have got to them is Roysters Ready Salted, which for some reason is no longer produced. Roysters T-Bone Steak has the texture but not the taste.
BanjoWest06-Feb-2014, 01:02:29 PM

When I was a kid they only did the plain flavor of potato puffs that was in the 50s and 60s in England I moved to Australia in the 70s and craving potato puffs so bad. Does anyone know where I can get them from please. thanks Joan

I remember these at our school tuck shop. They cost 9p then and fit perfectly in my blazer pocket. Handy to eat during double R.E without being caught.
ReubenD22-Dec-2013, 04:31:27 AM

Were these those sort of hollow thin curved tubes that came in a sort of tomato flavour? I have vague recollection of buying these at the school tuck shop. They were my favourite crisps alongside Snaps (spicy tomato with a dragon on the packet?) and KP Discos (S&V)
hotmetal02-Nov-2013, 02:18:46 AM

Hi all, fantastic to find these views about the BEST crisps ever.

I loved the original Walters Barbique/tomatoe ones when I was at school in the 60's and NOTHING comes close. What crap they now sell in the shops now,"Pringles"
Taste like chewed crisps flattened out and rebaked... yukkk

I managed to find thinner cheese and tomatoe Burtons ones up to a few years ago but they are no more.
I contacted Burtons a few years ago offering to buy the equipment that made them but was told it was sold off.
If anyone has any information as to the whereabouts of the equipment of means to manufacture these beauties please contact me and I will pursue the introduction of these gems

Fanstastic crisp snack, I remember them affectionately from whence I was at school. The last time I saw them was in a local Spar whilst on my travels many years ago now. I remember buying 20 pacts of the plain. I think they were 10p each?

I remember potato puffs when I was a mere lad of 11 back in 1961.
They were about 3d a bag. Thats 3 old pence to you youngsters.
They were still being sold up to about 2 years ago at a reasonable 10p.
Since then they have dissapeared of the face of the earth.

I remember buying lots of barbecue beef flavour burtons puffs, not the beefy bovril ones that were released later this was around 1975/6 and I used to spend my pocket money on these and I have never found another barbecue beef crisp that tastes as good as these did! In fact I am now wondering if XL made puffs too am I getting mixed up with the manufacturers?

I adore Potato Puffs!!!
I e-mailed Burtons a few years back and a very nice lady got back to me saying the machinery used to produce the little delights had basically reached the end of it's working life and it wasn't considered financially viable to replace it. We need a national petition to persuade Burtons to bring them back!! Seem to remember Tomato Sauce flavour and cheese and bean too.
tienna30-May-2010, 03:02:07 PM

i loved em!!,,used to buy a box at a time & we had em in our tuck shop at school..used to fill my duffle bag up & eat them during class lol....please bring them back.
ladypen26-May-2010, 07:24:22 PM

Hi,
I still long for these, (started out as Walters potato puffs I believe) as Linda says, open wide and just tip them in. I did find a box about 5 or 6 years ago, I think I did them in a dinner break.
If you see them try Crimbles cheese bites, triangular pillow shape but are similar to the puffs.

When I worked in Burton's Edinburgh factory back in 2000/2001 they were still making puffs, as one of my jobs involved me packing multipacks (which were like balloons!) into boxes.

I agree with one commenter who said they were the best!
If these were deemed a failure with the consumer, I could only blame Burtons for a sad lack of effort. They had a tasty, addictive product here. But who sees Burtons on TV or in prominant position in the supermarkets? I sure havent
If they'd marketted this product properly, there would have been no need to close the factory. In fact I believe the factory could have been churning these out for a world wide market or they could have franchized its production elsewhere.
It would be interesting to learn who owns Burtons and what their general commercial strategies are. It sounds like a small family concern with an small thinking executive structure.
czeshirecat18-Jul-2009, 07:57:23 PM

They stopped making these years ago, I contacted Burtons myself. That page comes up with a google search and is not valid.

They were so good.
poddys28-Jun-2009, 01:09:14 PM

These were SO nice they were addictive! Especially beef flavour ones after swimming. Got some good & bad news. YOU CAN STILL GET THEM! However, they are no longer the lovely ones made by Burtons. Off the top of my head I think they are made by a company called Windmill(?) BUT THEY DON'T TASTE ANYWHERE NEAR AS GOOD AS THE BURTON ONES. Such a shame. Get them in places like markets & pound shops now but be prepared...

southerner00629-Mar-2009, 04:53:38 PM

Burtons closed a couple of their factories, including the one which manufactured the crisps and snacks.Apparently it cost too much to produce the crisps and snacks so they now concentrate on their biscuit range,

If you liked the beef ones, crushed up t-bone steak roysters are the nearest I could get to them!
ladyrider26010-Mar-2009, 10:30:06 PM

If any potato puff lovers have a website of their own, why not start a petition to have Burtons manufacture them again? I loved the ready salted & would certainly sign any petition for their return.

Its a few years now since Burton stopped making them. I had a short note back from them simply confirming they were not going to continue them--in any flavour.I too wish they would reappear,my favourite the "plain" or ready salted, occasionally you might find one or two in a packet which were full of lard--a mistake--but DELICIOUS! My craving for Potato Puffs has been keeping me awake at night, I am so glad that there are so many others out there that feel the same way.

Does anyone remember the Bacon and Bean flavour and Lamb and Mont sauce flavour. They were my favourite, I used to buy 4 packets a day from my school tuck shop (1976-79).

Do you think we should send a petition to Downing street? They may make a better job of bringing puffs back than trying to fight crime!!!

Who knows maybe Potato puffs have turned to crime - therefore they have been outlawed!!

phoebefoalsmum10-Nov-2008, 06:34:39 PM

Come on Burtons, why can't this product be reintroduced, is it physically impossible or financially not viable. If there is a red tape issue at least let your many loyal customer's be made aware of this, before they boycott the rest of your produce. !!!!

Ian,

Norwich.

Big Lad04-Nov-2008, 10:23:57 AM

Oooooo yes, the beef ones were the best. Ive been told by a friend in Birmingham that they can occassionally be found on her local market, and she has promised to send me some next time she sees them. Did they make the pig-shaped bacon flavoured ones as well, or were they by a different company?
keljbj25-Oct-2008, 09:04:22 PM

I miss them too and had them at school from tuck shop nearly 30 years ago. Did find some in a 'Poundland' shop a year or so ago but nothing since although I keep looking. Burtons must bring them back to show todays kids what they are missing out on!!!

Mmmm Potato Puffs ... The only place I could get them eventually was at the local swimming pool tuck shop and that was years ago!! Also pink and white popcorn - yum!! There's probably some EU directive against them - ha ha ha
Janis26-Sep-2008, 12:43:02 PM

I was addicted to these when I was a child but then I didn't see them for donkey's years, I love donkeys by the way but not in the same way as burton's puffs. When I greww up and got a baby in my tummy, I found some in a shop and was hooked once again, i bought them by the box and scoffed them every day and every night untill my baby popped out, then they stopped selling them. I think they must still have the ability to make these crisps, so why don't they because one day loads of people are going to go off their heads and start chanting outside the Burton factory and cause traffic problems
lostloopy11-Sep-2008, 12:30:07 PM

I used to eat loads of Potato Puffs in the early 60s when I was at school. I have dreamt of them ever since. They were called Walter's Potato Puffs and made in Redditch, Stockport, Cheshire. It seems they must have been taken over by Burton's after that. I wrote to Burton's and they have no intention of bringing them back. So I asked for the recipe and they denied it. Are there any great cooks out there who could hazard a guess as to how they were made? I think they have some kind of flour in them. Maybe potatoes and flour or maybe they were made out of potato flour.
anajinn02-Sep-2008, 11:15:44 AM

my fave flavour was tomato & cheese

They were my fave crisp at breaktime in junior school, loved them even better when crushed to dust and you lift the bag up and tip them into your mouth!

I remember them and want them back!!! If Cadbury's can bring back the Wispa bar, Burton's can bring back the Puffs, or another company can do the honours (if it is possible and they make them the way they once where). I emailed Burtons about a week ago, no reply! How rude! I say we flood them with emails until they give in!!!
thecholl02-Nov-2007, 06:22:15 PM

I will kill for another long gone bag, or two, or three plus, of my beloved potato puffs. Where are you? Please come back. If this site can help I will buy a bag (and pay for postage) for all subscribers in this column, should we be successful!! Come on - I'm starving!!!
