The Poddington Peas

The Poddington Peas was a fantastic cartoon from 1986. It was about a little town called Poddington that was populated by some friendly, pea-like looking people. There were of course the traditional baddies that were always causing trouble.

I don't remember much but I do remember the theme tune. It went a bit like this... # Down at the bottom of the garden. Between the birds and the bees. There are a lot of little people. They call them the Poddington Peas. There's Creepy, Blackeye and there's Dumpy. Keep it a secret now please. There's Zippy, Happy and there's Seetpea. Among the Poddington Peas. The Poddington Peas... #

It's not word for word but it always gets me a round of applause in the pub!

They went on showing this for years! A favourite at lunchtimes on CBBC Two in those pre-digital days, when I was off school at my Nan's on a Baker Day, with chipolata sausages, chips and mushy peas (the irony's only just dawning) cooking for lunch. Then a few birthday cards that came to pieces (occasionally) in the presenter's hands. Cue the snooker. Happy days. Creepy and Blackeyed Pea were the villains (well, villain and henchman - henchpea? - respectively). Henchpea? I'm working too hard.

Actually the Poddington Peas was made in *1989*. My favourite was Captain Hop Pea (especially his role in 'Bubble Trouble' when he says 'Maybe they've gone to the island *alone*.'
