Jilted John

Sheffield born comedian actor Graham David Fellows created the character 'Jilted John' who had a hit single during the 1970's punk era which was called 'Gordon Is A Moron' and it reached number 4 in the UK charts but this artist was catagorised as a one-hit wonder . The lyrics to this track were quite aggressive and was based on John's girlfriend leaving him for a man called 'Gordon', it was classed by the music industry as being one of the strangest singles of the decade.

The phrase 'Gordon is a Moron' was linked to ex-Prime Minister Gordon Brown'.

This was and still is a brilliant album which perfectly summed up teenage life in the 70s. "It was classed by the music industry as being one of the strangest singles of the decade..." - rubbish! David "Kid" Jensen said that ONCE when introducing the track on TOTP. It was actually classed as a major hit in the 70s as EMI had to take over distribution rights to supply the huge demand for the album.

Bizarrely, I found a copy of this record in the back garden of a house we were thinking of buying in Malvern, Worcestershire in the Summer of 1986. It was lying in a patch of scrub just outside the garden fence, the label worn away but still playable- I had to take it home and play it on our old Fidelity turntable to find out what it was! Still got it too- the B side features the less well-known 'Yeah Yeah, I Love Sharon'. (We did indeed move to Malvern later that year and are still here, though not to the house where I found the record- we're about half a mile down the road from it now).
