Clothkits

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Hippie-dippy mail-order clothes company who sold you kits for making smocks, dresses and even dolls. They were always patterned and had the sewing instructions printed on the back of the fabric. The Clothkits doll was called Kitty.

I wish I still had my clothkits dresses my mum made me, because i have a little baby girl now, i still have cloth kitty though, and my mum found a dress for her that hadnt been made up, so i did it myself last week. i had a white dress with poppys and cornflowers on, i still have the dolls version, my daughters called Poppy and i'd love to still have that one.

Still have photos of my daughters wearing Clothkits gear...sun hats, padded jackets (my first attempts at quilting were on those), cute dresses, and yes, those thick tights...all bought from the shop in Lewes. At least their products were more original than those in Mothercare & Marks 'n' Sparks; it was nice to be able to dress the girls in something different...happy hippy days!

I loved clothkits...I wore them all through university, in my first job as a teacher and my little girl (born in 1988) had some of their ready-made stuff. I finally finished one of the child's padded jackets, complete with stuffed animals to go in the pockets, less than 10 years ago. I gave it away - wish I'd kept it!

I had a great school satchel made by mum, which I lost on a National Express coach on the way back from University. I'll never forget it; the best bag I ever had *weep*.

I had a coat that was clothkit, i think. It was padded with a pastel jungle print on it and there was lots of random pockets on it with little animals in them. Many a day i spent searching supermarket floors because on of the animals had fallen out so in the end my mum sewed them in. I bet everyone in my school was dead jealous, funny how none of them said so at the time.

Oh yes.. I've no idea what made me Google Clothkits, but here I am with my recollections of buying only the ready made clothing, but our children & I really enjoying it. Quirky. We have a family photo where the two older girls - yes, born in the early eighties - are sporting er.. charming knitted dresses & thick tights. One's in shades of purple, the other shades of pink. Ready made!! I was a faux earth-mother!!

My mum used to make clothkits clothes for me and my sister in the early 80's. My sister always had a pink or burgandy pinafore and mine was always blue. I also remember visiting a clothkits shop in Bath I think. My dad loved it because there was an area just for dads with newspapers and coffee.

Sounds a good idea - mums could send their kids out in something different to the rest, yet fashionable and affordable !

I was one of those 'hippy' mothers who sewed many clothkits clothes. My 2 sons wore brown and blue needlecord dungarees and my daughter had many of the pretty frocks. I loved making them. My older son is called Crispin (now age 33) and he always teases me that he is the product of 70's hippie parents. This proves that he is right! Liz
