Astro Boy (or Tetsuan Atom ) was a Japanese comic book created in the early 50's by Japanese comic book artist Osamu Tezuka. The comic follows the story of Astro, a boy robot and his adventures saving the world.
A cartoon was made of the comic in the 1960's in black and white, but never made it to American audiences.
It was followed shortly by a color series in 1982 and dubbed for English audiences shortly thereafter.
