Airwolf

Airwolf was a frighteningly powerful combat helicopter bristling with guns that was stolen by test pilot Stringfellow Hawke. Hawke stole Airwolf and hid it in the desert so that he could negotiate with the government to get them to find his brother who went missing in action in Vietnam.

Another one of the TV programs of the era that featured freelance soldiers of fortune (like The A Team). This time Hawke would bring out Airwolf now and again to fly an unofficial mission of national importance at the request of the The Firm.

Great concept, ruined by Jan-Michael Vincent, who employed a mumble-and-scowl delivery in lieu of actual acting talent. The fourth season, filmed in Vancouver, may have been lacking in the special-effects department, but was an improvement simply because he wasn't in it! Curiously, the new main character was played by Barry Van Dyke, who had previously starred in 'Galactica 80' - yet another "continuation" which was universally excoriated by fans of the original show. Gotta admit, regardless of cast, that huge helicopter appearing from behind a handy building, was one hell of a punchline. However, at that time I was acquainted with a scientist who worked for the military, and would laugh hysterically at the technical errors (which she said were many!).

What really REALLY used to bother me about Airwolf was why they thought that the image in the titles of Stringfellow Hawke playing a bloody Cello on a hill could possibly make girls watch a show which was made simply to make kids like me want to fly a Helicopter with fold-away wheels and blow up stuff. It also went rubbish when Jan Michael Vincent left, and probably took his Cello with him.

I was only ickle when this came out, but I absolutely loved it! A mach 1 plus helicopter (not that I knew what a mach was) with big guns and a pilot with a strange name. Would you name your kid Stringfellow?!

I remember thinking how cool it was that this guy could have such an incredible aircraft that he could keep hidden and use only for good! Wow! What a wild ride!
