The Darling Buds of May

The Darling Buds of May was first screened in 1991 and was based on the delightful novels of H.E. Bates. My recollection of it is one of those Sunday evening 'feel good' programmes that make 'perfick' family viewing to wind up the weekend. Starring David Jason, it was pretty well guaranteed to be a success, but the role was different from those that he had previously filled (Only Fools and Horses, Open All Hours, etc) and further demonstrated his diverse acting skills.

My favourite memory from the series was of him eating a cream cake covered in tomato sauce - which I believe David did actually eat! Ably supported by a host of new talent representing Pop Larkin's large family, Philip Franks, Pam Ferris and Catherine Zeta Jones were all names we were due to hear a lot more of.

In particular, Catherine Zeta Jones was set for stardom - how could she fail with a name like that and good looks to match?

Very much the cosy comfort TV that we like on Sunday nights when we're wallowing in self-pity ; I'd rank Heartbeat with it in that regard (Philip Franks played Sgt Craddock in HB ). The start for Catherine Zeta-Jones but something hugely different from Delboy for David Jason.

When I was about 6 it was my ambition in life to become a member of the Larkin family! All the warmth and cosiness of country life, I wanted it all!

Oh To Be In England.Thats my catch phrase.I adore the Buds.I remamber the Sunday dinners and having to catch the geese to cook. They always had a way of making you feel good. The first time i watched it I was entranced. It was a Sturday night and I accidently taped it instead of The Bill and i was hooked.I now watch the series every other week.i own it on DVD and Video.I love the episodes when Pa is running for parish council and its up against Captain Battersby.Actually I just love the whole series and everything about it.Oh to live that way of life.
