I suspect that this is the BBC Scotland TV Series with Emma Thompson and Robbie Coltrane. Superb series about a band "The Majestics" touring Scotland with Coltrane as the brother of the original lead singer. The series gets more gritty as it goes but is well worth watching. It was made in the early 80's I think but has only been released on DVD in the last year or so due to licensing issues.
