Topper

The Topper was my favourite of The Beano/Dandy type comic. There was a hapless fox, originally called "Foxy", that was always starving and trying to nab chickens, and getting shot in the backside for his troubles! A Minnie the Minx type girl called Beryl The Peril, who I thought was MUCH better than Minnie! And a brilliant detective that I think was called Ned Kelly...and he had a sidekick called Cedric, who looked like a city banker in a bowler hat! They were rubbish at solving crime! But The Topper was fab! We still have copies of them in the loft at my parents home from the early 70's...I might get them out and have a recap on just how great they were!

Ned Kelly was the detective and my memory was that Cedric was originally a seal, I can’t remember how he came into the story, but Ned disguised him so no-one would find him. He remained the Cedric with the bowler hat that you talk about. Please tell me I’m not the only one who has that memory?

As a child growing up in the '70s and '80s, I read The Dandy, The Beezer and The Topper weekly. My tribute to a golden era of paper comics here: http://bashstreetcomics.blogspot.co.uk/

I have very fond memories of Topper too. I once won a compendium of games for a little cartoon I had published in the mid seventies - it was a picture of some tablets asleep with the caption "sleeping tablets". I didn't wind up being a cartoonist (just a psychologist). If you happen to stumble on this drawing in your collection I would love to hear as I haven't seen it since the seventies. Thanks for reminding me of this charming classic comic.

Yes Jo, I got the Topper in the late 60's,used to look forward to a thursday when it was delivered... the free gifts were great, do you remember a great device called something like a whizz- bang? you shook it hard and it made a noise like a loud gunshot! No idea what it was supposed to be for, other than annoying grownups! Ha,ha, happy days
