Saucy Sponge

This product was a mix, which made a sponge pudding with a sauce base. I don't know exactly how they were prepared, as my mother used to make them up for us. They came in a variety of flavours, and there was definitely a lemon variety, but I don't remember what the others were. To make them, you mixed up the contents of the packet, put it in an ovenproof dish, and as it cooked, the sponge rose and left a layer of sauce at the bottom of the dish. Does this trigger memories for anyone?

Saucy Sponge was made by McDougalls. I was a rep for them at the time & helped to launch the product. The varieties were Chocolate,Lemon,Raspberry,Apple & Treacle. We sold tons but like a lot of products the novelty wore off & the investment needed on advertising etc. was not available. Always thought it was a great line but sadly it was discontinued.

Funny enough I wrote this comment on a DM piece about Findus Crispy Pancakes - Anyone else remember Saucy Sponge? You'd mix the sponge mix in the bowl then make up the sauce mix & pour it carefully on the sponge mix so it sat on top. As if by magic after 40-50mins baking the Sponge had risen on top & gone golden & crunchy. Raspberry and Lemon flavours were ace!

Oh yes..never let Mum leave the supermarket without it. Remember the chocolate and butterscoth ones mostly and can still remember the smells and taste. the sponge mix was prepared and put on the bottom..the sauce mix on top and the sponge would rise up through the sauce and become slightly crispy mmmmm sadly SS didn't make it further than the mid-late 80s :'-(

OMG!! Thank you!!! I have got a right good old discussion going on on Facebook about this product!!! We've all been trying to remember what it was called! There was also a Raspberry flavour which was gorgeous! Such a clever idea. Hairy Bikers had a lady on who had a recipe for something similar she called The Impossible Pudding. I can go back to bed now!

I remember Saucy Sponge extremely well. I always bought the lemon one as I love lemon puddings. Where have they gone as I haven't seen them in shops for years? Can anyone out there help, please.

That's mad. I was explaining g to my wife how I won a competition in the 80's with saucy sponge and I ended up winning an Atari 2600 , the 80's equivalent of a Playstation 4. She had never heard of saucy sponge so I googled it and came across this site. Still couldn't find a pic of the packaging though.. Lol

I also remember cooking both Chocolate and Lemon Saucy sponges both purchased in a box like a modern cake mix I'm thinking that was all of 30 plus years ago.. I have made both now for my grandchildren using a Chocolate saucy sponge recipe and Lemon pond pudding both are delicious..

Yeah remember Saucy Sponge very well as a kid when we lived in Scotland. My Mum used to get it from Fine Fare in Dunfermline. Was delicious with Custard. Don't suppose anyone knows if it's still available anywhere?
