MG Montego

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

The MG Montego was the sporty version of the Austin Montego saloon and best known for its electronic instrument panel that would talk to you in a digitised voice if something wasn't right. I used to refer to it as a Knight Rider dashboard.

Ithink you will find that the stubby Maestro used the first version of the talking dashboard, which as i recall used green lcd displays and had proper buttons on the computer bit. The Montego however had the second version with oronge displays and a touch sensitive computer. im the poor muppet that owned both lol.

Sorry Sean, you couldn't have been listening during your apprenticeship... They did fit the voice computer to Montego's as well as its uglier shorter brother! My dad had a black MG Montego - B45 HAU - I remember it now! It was the digital dash one where a very authorititve lady used to tell us, "Low temperature look out for ice" and other amusing comments. I remember figuring out how to press a combination of buttons that would make the voice go through all of the voice commands in one go! My friends were amazed. My dad was the coolest in the street! He still misses that car....

I bought an MG Montego as my second car in 1998 for ?200, it was beige and was rusting away but the engine was sound and it went like a bat out of hell. Many a motorist on the A1 was overtaken by a rust cloud in the late 90's.

I served my apprenticeship at an Austin Rover dealer in the mid eighties, and remember these well. The talking dash was only available on the Maestro, and was dropped before the Montego was launched. They were never fashionable but few people realise that Maestros were faster than the Golf GTi, which made for interesting road tests. Any exscuse to thrash somebody elses car. Happy days indeed!
