Fiat X1/9

The Italian answer to the Triumph TR7, this little sports car was manufactured by Fiat from 1972-82, and by Bertone from '82-'89. Famous for their removable hard-top, they had mid-mounted transverse engines with rear wheel drive, and were available in 1300 or 1500 versions. They were noted for their excellent handling, and I LOVED them as a child- thought they were the absolute bees knees, even preferred them to the Triumph Stag! They were, however, prone to rust, especially around the wheel arches. Many came in metallic paint finishes. A thriving Owner's Club exists to this day, and they make ideal affordable modern classics for anybody who fancies something a bit different but doesn't want parts to be too hard to come by. We had a friend who had one, she was a social worker- kept it until she became pregnant and got too fat to fit behind the wheel, whereupon she sold it for some modern Eurobox. I'd have bought it if only she'd offered it to me!!
