CB Radio

I started out with CB radio in Hull in 1982 with my very first Pegasus 3 120 channel radio, an SWR meter, a power pack and an aerial stuck on the top of a biscuit tin. I was 15 years old and could not believe this world I had suddenly connected into.

We would stay up all night just talking to each other about Harrington Jackets or Fishtail Parkas, Mods and Rockers and who had the most powerful rig (those who were lucky enough to own a cobra 148GTLDX with roger bleep were to be looked up to!).

We all tended to own eyeball badges, mine had flashing red LEDs just to emphasise the fact I was a CB'er! There I was, 15 years old with my Harrington Jacket covered in Secret Affair, Madness and The Who badges, jeans so tight they hurt, just a hint of lipstick and eyeliner and a wedge haircut that covered my right eye so rendered me partially sighted, riding around on my Raleigh Grifter with a car battery strapped to it and my Pegasus 3 blaring out "Eyeball, eyeball, 1-4 a copy", and "Is anyone out there?".

So that was me, "Hound Dog" the CB'er. Those were the days. If by any chance any of you out there were in the Hull area and remember my "handle" you may also remember a lady breaker called "Polo Cruncher" who through the miracle of radio waves became (and still is) my wife! I hope that this has brought some fond memories to some of you and I would love to hear some of your stories.

I remember my cousin's boyfriend getting a CB for his car and he asked my cousin if she could find out if the signal was strong enough..So my cousin said 'can I get a Roger?' And some bloke said 'Roger' and my cousins boyfriend missed the signal and told my cousin to ask again....I about collapsed and so did he when we heard her innocently say: 'Can the bloke who just Rogered me, do it one more time please'?

OMG...what brilliant memories I have from my CB days!! Used to stay up all night on this. In the early hours you could use the 'skip' to talk to America and Europe. I started off with a DV27 aerial, then eventually had a 22foot 'silver rod' put on our roof. Had the eyeball cards printed and burned rubber in friends cars all night looking for 'copies' and meeting up (eyeballing). Once legalised and stuck on to FM rather than good old AM, it lost it's attraction but I will never forget these few years...fantastic memories. The best days of my life I think as I met so many great people and had so much fun!! Met my hubb on it aged 17, married at 19......

I was about 10 at the time and would sit in my cousin's Ford Capri for hours on end trawling the airwaves for a copy! I didn't really have much to talk about at that age and was trying to understand the lingo as I went along. All I can remember is 'how many candles do you have?'. Can't remember my handle.
