Val Doonican Show

Before Ant and Dec on a Saturday evening the Val Doonican Show was the height of light entertainment. It was basically another vehicle for pseudo-talented 70s C list celebs. Suave folk Irish folk singer, Doonican would start the show up in the "gods" of the theatre and end with him in a rocking chair and woolly cardy singing a fogey's favourite like "Some of my Best Friends are Songs". Harmless and useless.

Ah, our Val goes back far further than Ant and Dec. He had loads of chart hits in the 60's, both lighthearted (Paddy McGinty's Goat) and serious (Mysterious People). His last hit was 'Morning' in the early 70's when he was widely criticised for singing about illicit love and tarnishing his wholesome image. We always watched his variety shows on Saturday nights through the 60's, and his Christmas shows were unmissable. I think Sturgio's comments are a little unfair, as this man was virtually a national institution in the 60's, who's star was definitely on the wane by the time Ant and Dec were on the rise. His shows were innocent entertainment, popular in those days but sadly missing from our screens now, in favour of reality shows like 'X'Factor. Our tastes were different then, less demanding and less critical.
