Ultravox

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Ultravox had been around for a while and had released a couple of albums before Midge Ure joined them in 1979. In the early 80's 'Vienna' was in the charts for weeks and weeks but it only got to number two. Midge Ure was the 'other' man behind Band Aid with Bob Geldof.

Rather like The Human League, Ultravox's early material was actually quite punky- if you've ever listened to their debut album 'Ha!Ha!Ha!' you'll know what I mean. Loved their megalithic symphonic minor harmonies, awesome. My favourites were 'Hymn' (a song that broods pensively about us being in the 'end time') and 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes'. I think the latter was meant to be about atomic war, although in the video, Midge plays a senior scientist working at an atomic power station which suddenly goes into critical meltdown and explodes- he just has time to get home to his wife & child before it happens. Some terrific clips in that one; as he's driving home, he witnesses a bunch of children gathered around an ice-cream van who flee in terror when the alert siren goes off- one little girl leaves her rag doll trodden in the gutter, which the camera homes in on....wow, powerful stuff!

Ultravox. Is that with or without the exclamation point? There is a difference....
