The Dandy

OK so The Dandy has been around since the 1930s but I'm including it on the site because it was still a big seller when I was growing up in the 80s.

The central character was Desperate Dan (I actually joined the Desprate Dan Pie Eaters Club and got a cool pie shaped badge in the post!), and other supporting characters included Korky the Cat, Hungry Horace and Bananaman.

I always had a greater affinity to the Dandy than its better-selling sister , the Beano ; my parents brought it to me from the shops when I was small ! The current one is ad-ridden and has a different humour to the ones in the 70s. Fave all-time character ? The rather embarrassingly-named Spunky and his Spider.

I loved Billy the Cat and Katy! A young kid and his lass who had cat like powers and solved inncocent neighbourhood crimes! me and my brother thought we also possessed their agility, and tried to leap cat-like from the wash-house roof one day....I ended up impaled on next doors fuschia for my troubles! I liked Korky, too, but Desperate Dan go on my nerves...too much pie!
