Satellite City (cartoon, 1990)

Not to be confused with the Welsh sitcom of the same name, this was a short-lived cartoon series set on the distant planet of Climatica, in which anthropomorphised 'weather' characters in the form of raindrops, sun rays, clouds etc. were engaged in a never-ending battle with the 'Bogeymen', ruthless industrialists who ran highly polluting heavy industry and didn't care how much damage they did to the planet. Lead character was a large raincloud called Dmitri, who was essentially modelled on a Russian cossack with a heavy sheepskin coat and handlebar moustache (everything Russian in those days being very cool and trendy on account of Glasnost and the Gorbachev reforms). The cartoon was meant to raise awareness amongst young children of the importance of environmental protection and the need to be 'green'- it didn't have a very long run and was usually slotted in amongst other cartoons early on Saturday mornings. Theme song was sung by Mal Pope- largely forgotten now, but does anyone remember it??
