Roller Discos

Back in the time when roller boots with a wheel at each corner were first popular there seemed to be a craze for Roller Disco's. Our local one was in the gymnasium of the local YMCA and consisted of an entry fee of about 25p, nominal hire of sweaty roller boots if you didn't own your own and a couple of hundred similar aged kids skating round in a circle for a couple of hours to a DJ playing the latests tunes in a dark corner. There was always the one or two show-offs who could skate backwards and do tricks. My "trick" was NOT getting onto the end of the traditional last tune conga and doing a Frank Spencer through the double doors.

Those were the days with the double session at the Magnet Leasure centre in Maidenhead. All the gang had their Bauers with either Veriflex wheels or if you wanted to really flash and do hockey stops you just had to have Belair Hockey's. Long live the 80's. JWP we miss you.

God I remember my roller boots, black and yellow they were. I used to go to the roller disco with my mates for many years. Had a great time, I had my boots for many years after and gave them to my niece a few years ago, she loves them. Gonna get myself some more and take her skating with me, ahhh the good old days:o)

I was a regular of the Nevada in Bolton too....and remember those Lime milkshakes! yuck! ha I had my first proper kiss with this 20 year old lorry driver from Bolton....aargh! and I was barely 13 at the time! He gave me a lovebite and my parents went ape! Me and my mates used to go skating there every Saturday without fail plastered in make up and wearing our ra-ra skirts/jumper dresses, gold belts and plastic earrings/bangles...and skate to the great '80's tunes on the huge video screens. I remember ABC's 'Look of Love' and Adam & The Ants' and various other TOTP videos being shown. We all used to try and sneak up to the bar for a sly Lager & Lime, but I used to chicken out and only ordered pints of Lemonade as I thought the police might raid the place and arrest me! ha How foolish I was! Great times, fantastic atmosphere, friendly staff and customers...and loads of (fairly) fit lads! What more could us girls want?! Happy days! I was sad when I heard it had burnt down :( Still I have those wonderful memories.... Dawn x
