Meri Mate Drinks

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Meri Mate Drinks came in plastic tubes with nipped closed ends and had a hole on the top for the straw. They came in orange and cola flavours I think. Great explosion if you jumped on them!

*Falls on knees sobbing with gratitude* Thankyou, thankyou, thankyou!! I too thought I'd imagined these! I remember buying the Cola ones on my way home from school from a corner shop (it had an advertising poster on the door of a weeping lemon with the slogan, "I Drink Idris When I's Dry"); as I remember, the Meri Mate tube had a little sticker on one side covering a circular pattern of tiny holes. You had to peel this off to be able to suck the drink up the straw!

Thank you!!! I thought I was the only one remembered these. I was starting to think I'd made them up. Did they do lemonade as well? Trouble was once they were open you couldn't put them down, soemone had to hold them. But they were fab!

No-one else seems to remember this stuff but I do. It was great at the time - a blinding Summer in Scotland, unforgetable. Not sure how it would taste now though, but I daresay the explosion would still be impressive. Conjours up so many memories of people long gone. May its memory and theirs never die.

And the tv jingle was "Drink a meri mate... they're great mate" with the school boy stashing one in his school blazer's inside pocket!
