Heel Caps (Blakeys)

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Heel caps were put on the heel of your shoes to extend their life. You used to get the "horse shoe" ones that went all the way around the heel. They made a lot of noise when you walked, and you could run and slide in the school halls. Of course this would get you in trouble and they were finally outlawed in school.

I worked at Blakeys in Armeley Leeds in 1975, I was 16 years old. It was my first ever job , I had to "knock off "the segs from the metal frame that they were attatched to. The molds were made by a machine called a "disa", which would compress sand into a shape like an airfix model with branches leading to the shape of a "seg". The metal was still hot from the sand molds. We had to knock them into metal tubs and when they were full we would drag them and load them onto trolleys to be taken to the warehouse. I remember the older men pouring molton metal into sand molds . It was extremley dangerous work with no safety clothing except a leather apron and steel toe capped boots. I would go home every afternoon at 5pm absoloutley shattered .

Has the late lamented Blakey's of Armley been replaced or succeeded by a manufacturer of similar heel (and toe?) caps. Can anyone help me with supplier details?

Ah yes! Stay press trousers and Brogues or Royals with Quarter tips! Magic! Of course, Dr Martens were no good for Blakeys!
