Toys TOYS

Gloworm

Gloworm was a cuddly toy Glow Worm made by Hasbro's Playskool that would light up when squeezed. There were a whole range of different shapes, sizes and colours of Gloworm and apparently some of the smaller ones did not light up but were 'glow-in-the-dark' painted instead.

Introduced in 1982 all the Gloworms were fairly similar in appearance though with a chubby work-like body and two stubby arms. Each Gloworm also wore a night cap and a battery was fitted inside its plush body.

I think the idea was that the Gloworm was a comforter for children who didn't like going to sleep in the dark. The Gloworms were such a success that all sorts of different spin-off products were released including story books, night lights and videos right up until the early 90s. In 1986 Playskool also released the Glo Friends - smaller plastic models of the popular Gloworm characters.

Lots of memories :) My wife and I gave my daughter one when she was young. Now grown, she has a child of her own. Glo-worm was one of many toys I saved to be shared with her children. Unfortunately,Glo is ready to go but the light bulb no longer works. It does not have any identifying marks on it so, this is a grandpa's plea for any and all information I might gather so as to return Glo-Worm's glow. Any and all help would be apprciated. Until then..."Sweet Dreams"

I specifically told my mum I wanted a Gloworm for Christmas, or for my birthday and she got me one alright- ONLY THE WRONG BLOOMING TYPE! I was expecting the green one, only to unwrap a hideous looking baby version with two faces. To add more insult to injury, my mum only went and forgot to buy batteries-not good when it's the festive period... Oddly enough, in the early 90's, I became obsessed with Gloworms and bought a stash of them at boot fairs-including the much wanted green one!

Wow Glow Worms! I still have mine in my mum's loft some where! Me and my brother both had them and we used to stay up at night so we could play with them in the dark! Cool! Ours where green with little night caps on and their faces glowed when you squeezed them. I must find mine and see if they still work!!

I loved glow worms. I had little ones with wholes in the bottom where you could stick your finger. I remember if you set them on the light bulb to charge them, they would melt and smell really badly.

Glo Worms, does exactly what it says on the box. These were larger than lifesize plastic worms, or caterpillars that glowed in the dark. You used to be able to get a good hours glow for about 5 minutes under a decent watt lightbulb. These were very good when you wanted to scare your little brother into thinking there were ghosts in the house!
