Gladiators

Gladiators was an ITV game show which appeared in 1992 and in which contestants of varying physical abilities were pitted against the show's very own Gladiators (most of whom were professional athletes). In various games they would try and obtain as many points as possible in order to win.

The original presenters of the show were John Fashanu and Ulrika Jonsson but in later series, Jeremy Guscott replaced Fashanu.

In every show, two male and two female contestants competed against each other and, in the final round, they had to compete against each other in 'The Eliminator'. This involved racing across an obstacle course with monkey bars, cargo nets and zip lines to name but a few. The points which they had accumulated during the rest of the show decided how much of a head start the leading contestant would get.

Every series was a large knockout tournament where the winning contestants of every show went through to the next round and finally the overall champion was crowned at the end of the series.

Gladiators was filmed at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham in front of an audience of about 7000 people and ran from 1992 to 1999.

Gladiators was a great family show that we all used to sit together and watch as a family. I was quite young when it was on and thought it was brilliant. Is it me or were game shows just more fun back then?

Gladiators was essential saturday evening entertainment for me. Each Gladiator had a special name. There was Shadow, who was like a huge, crazy eyed Linford Christie. Cobra(mr nice guy), Warrior was absolutely huge, Saracen was cool and who can forget....Wolf, the bad guy. And also, the female Gladiators: Scorpio, Panther, Lightning, and last but not least, Jet! Alan Partridge's fantasy lady.
