Energen Rolls

This Memory is looking a little short on nostalgia! Have you got anything you could add?

Energen Rolls were rough, tennis-ball-size, crunchy, dry, dough type things! I remember them from picnics with triangular Dairylea cheese spread on them. I loved them to pieces! This was late fifties early sixties anyone else remember them?

In the late 1950s, my Domestic Science teacher showed the girls in my class how to make them. Knead small portions of the made dough under a cold water tap, to wash away the gluten and then bake.

Oops, I should have said to wash away the starch - not gluten.

Oh yes, I remember them well from when I was a child. They came in a big box and my mum used to buy them when she was on a diet! But I used to adore them with butter and marmite on them!

The thought of the Energen Rolls, makes my mouth water, not so much the rolls, as the salty butter. When I came back from school, - starving of course - (this was about 1953 or 4), my mother was still at work, so I had to go next door to wait, and "Auntie Alice" used to give me half of an Energen Roll. Because of my experiences of coming home to a empty house, after school, I resolved not to do the same to any children I might have, consequently, at the birth of my first child in 1971 I gave up going out to work and since then have worked from home. Seeing as they no longer exist, maybe I'll try and make them myself.

Yes, they were supposed to be low salary. The ironic thing was I am celiac so shouldn't have been eating them.

They just floated into my mind, not sure why, and I remember I loved them - they had a unique taste and were very crunchy, though quite light in texture as well.

They were still around in 1974 and then disappeared - I really wish they'd bring them back. The box was huge but they were lovely and light. I manged to lose weight on them.

I have just tried to jog my mothers memory and she says she can vaguely remember them from them fifties. I seem to remember they were light, fluffy inside and came in a blue/silver box with a picture of a centaur(?) on it. Were people conscious of being overweight back then? Terry

I remember them well as I worked for Energen foods from 1962-1970 I actually worked on the rolls as a "job instructor"my time there was some of the best times in my life. There was nothing better then removing rejects as they came out of the oven and were still warm crack them open and scoop out the middle to eat then I was a slim 5'8"tall teenager ate all day long oh dear how I wish I could sgtill be there.By the way the factory is no longer there it was pulled down and a housing estate was built there.
