Doctor Snuggles

"Friend of the animal world" I seem to remember. Garish sub- Hanna Barbera reminiscent of the Care Bears cartoon where the sickly sweet and kind Dr Snuggles evaded the clutches of some evil fiend. It was shown on Sunday mornings on ITV before the Sunday service in the early 80s. The theme tune was unbearable and still rings in my ears now!

He had a female robot housekeeper called Matilda Junkbottom, who was made out of old tin cans- the garden shed was called Rickety Rick, he used to talk in a creaky voice and sometimes walked around on a pair of (usually unseen) legs. Snuggles's animal friends included a dungaree-wearing badger and a Cockney pigeon who ran a 'pigeon post' service- can anyone remember their names? The villians were Willie the Terrible Fox (who had a Brooklyn accent) and his sidekick Charlie Rat.

Nick Price, the artist who drew the cartoons, is my brother's best friend's dad!

Doctor Snuggles had a great theme tune (Chris Moyles sometimes plays it on his radio show!) and was perfect kids viewing with an old man on a pogo stick and a wooden rocket... ok, maybe it sounds dodgy. But it wasn't. Back then. Peter Ustinov narrated so it had to be ok!
